Signs on the alt keyboard. Symbols on the keyboard using the Alt key. It all started with dash

Knowing what Alt codes are and how to use them, you can quickly enter from the keyboard many characters for which it is originally provided by individual keys.

We often see them on web pages. Especially many of them in the statuses of users of social networks. In addition, they meet us in various printing products: magazines, newspapers, books ... almost everywhere, where there is a place for all typography, you can meet alt-codes.

It all started with dash

For the idea of this article, I came across the situation with the correction at work in one of the many documents of the signs of hyphen on a normal long dash. To enter the latter, I used the Ctrl + key combination in Word on the numeric keypad. However, a little knowing HTML and remember that there are two types of dash in it (long - and short - -), it became interesting to me, but is it possible to enter his various kinds from the keyboard?

Starting to look for in this direction, I came across the 97th paragraph of "RU.OVOVTIES" from the famous domestic designer Artememy Lebedev. It says that it is necessary to distinguish between 4 symbol-screenshots: hyperfis, minus, short and long dash.

But on the keyboard, we only have a hyphen (and then not quite a hyphen, as it turns out), so the remaining symbols need to be added in a special way: using special Alt codes. To enter them, you need to hold the ALT key and click on the side numeric keypad with the NUMLOCK active switch, certain combinations of numbers. On laptops Without additional digital keys, their functions usually perform buttons on the right side of the keyboard with the Fn modifier key. Dimensional all this in the form: Alt + Digital code:

But it turns out, not all! Kind deeper, I found another adulteable, where the author talks about the fact that there is a total of 9 (!) Different dishes who can be not only hyphens and dash! So, for example, I learned that on the keyboard a button that many is called a minus or a hyphen, actually introduces a separate symbol - a hyphen-minus, which is a little longer than a hyphen, but shorter a minus!

In general, the topic of alto codes and HTML codes turned out to be very interesting and I decided to study the question more thoroughly ...

Where do Alt codes come from

History with Alto codes began with the MS-DOS operating system. There, when holding the ALT key and input on the numeric keypad, a specific numeric sequence, this sequence was interpreted by the BIOS "OM and was displayed directly as ASCII -Simvol with the appropriate code.

With the appearance and distribution of Windows, the ASCII-symbol tables moved to various text encodings, saving partial compatibility, character sets, and mechanism for the ALT codes. To view all the characters available in a specific font and find out their codes, you can use the standard program. symbol table (Win + R - Charmap - ENTER). By the way, you can copy the desired icons in visual mode:

To date, there are three types of alt codes:

 1. Normal - We are entered by holding the ALT keys and a set of numbers from 1 to 255. In this case, the code 256 (as and 0) does not give any symbol, and after 256 all characters are repeated with a frequency of 256, that is, 1 = 257 = 513 = 769 .. ., 2 = 258 = 514 = 770 ... etc. In essence, we have an 8-bit character set (28 = 256) defined for Windows encoding.
 2. 0 master - Entered in the same way as usual, but zero is always used as the first digit. 0 The leading ALT codes do not coincide with the usual numbers, but contain partially repeated characters. For example, the paragraph icon in conventional codes is inserted using the ALT + 21 combination, and in the 0-leading - Alt + 0167. As the usual, they contain 256 characters and are repeated in the same way after code 0256, but the character set in them corresponds to the old ASCII-set. What is characteristic, when entering in Russian and English layouts, characters with the same code differ (see tables below).
 3. 16-riche or Unicode - as a rule, not available for input under normal conditions. Unicode characters can be displayed only on web pages (entered in HTML code according to the "Code_Simvol" scheme or using special mnemonics) or in text processors, like Microsoft Office Word or OpenOffice Writer. In the latter, they can be introduced as ordinary Alt codes, taking into account the translation of the number of 16-riche to 10-tich. That is, to add, for example, the same paragraph icon, which in the character table has the code "00A7", you need to enter the code "0167" with the alt button. You can quickly translate a 16-riche number in a 10-tidy system in a standard Windows calculator by activating the "view" - "programmer", switting the input mode from "hex" to
A little more will pay attention to the 16-riche codes. In contrast to ordinary Alt codes and 0 leading, they may contain up to 65536 characters (216 = 65536). At the same time, the first 256 characters coincide with the classic set of ASCII and, accordingly, with 0 leading, but are not limited to them. In order to distinguish the symbols of the Unicode from conventional Alt codes, they are often recorded according to the "U + code_set" scheme (we can meet such a record in the symbol table).

Windows has the ability to activate direct input of 16-riche Alt codes without transferring them to a 10-ticht. For this man open Registry editor (Win + R - Regedit - ENTER), Go to section HKCU \\ CONTROL PANEL \\ INPUT METHOD and add there new String section (type REG_SZ) named EnableHexNumpad. and meaning 1 , then restart the computer:

After rebooting, you can enter U-codes in the same form in which they are recorded in the character table. The only nuance - during the input number it will be necessary not only to hold ALT, but also to press the "+" button before the code itself (if the desired symbol is not added, "+" must be held along with Alt).

Alt codes tables

A complete list of all font signs, as we found out, can be viewed in the character table, and here we will give complete tables of ordinary Alt codes and 0 leading.

Some explanations to the tables. With conventional alto codes, I think everything is clear. But a number of initial and some subsequent 0-leading Alt codes, as we could see in the tables, give out incomprehensible characters (after them are explained in brackets). These symbols are called managers and came to modern OS along with the ASCII codes, which were still used to control punctuents!

Also note that in the English and Russian layout, 0-leading Alt codes coincide only to half. The second half, where Cyrillic is introduced in the Russian-speaking layout, in English-speaking is assigned to all sorts of letters with diacritical signs.

Symbolic fonts and alternative keyboard layouts

Undoubtedly, Alt codes are a very useful thing. But everything is quite difficult to remember, but considering the presence of unicode symbols, it is almost impossible at all! From here we have at least three outputs:

 1. Remember only the most frequently used Alt codes for the placement of punctuation marks.
 2. Create a special layout with an advanced character set available for input.
 3. Use alternative fonts with the desired symbols instead of letters.

The first option at first glance seems the most optimal. It does not require any additional actions, in addition to memorizing codes for entering the necessary characters. For a faster memorization I recommend that you find on the Internet or make a sign with the most useful alto-codes and print it. Here is an example of one of these tablets that are freely available online:

Similar tables can also be found to memorize HTML code and mnemonic. The most successful version of the latter, in my opinion, is collected in the relevant article in Wikipedia.

The second option is more precipitated and requires interference with the system. He is to create standard keyboard layout on alternativeIn which the modifier keys are more efficiently used, inserting certain characters to specified combinations.

To date, one of the best alternative Russian-speaking layouts for Windows and MacOS is considered the Typographic layout of Ilya Burman:

The principle of operation of the Birman layout is similar to the principle of operation of Alt codes. Only, unlike them, it is not used left here, but the right alt (Alt GR). To enter the same characters marked in the top row, except for Alt Gr need to clamp also shift. For a faster memorization, you can cut and stick the layout icons on the keyboard or print them and use as a crib.

To set the birman layout, you need to download it from the site on the link above and install as a regular program. Then, from the control panel or properties of the language panel, open the language settings and click the "Parameters" button to the right of the "Russian" option. In the window that opens in the "Input methods" group, click "Add Input Method" and in the layout list, select a new typographic layout, and then remove the standard one. To save changes, you may need to restart:

The most interesting option for solving the task of entering unconventional characters can be called the use of alternative symbol or iconscripts. These fonts have become most popular in recently in web design, since it contains scalable vector images that can be used for various buttons and infographics on modern sites.

Symbolic fonts When you press the keyboard keys allow you to display certain icons instead of ordinary letters. Since such icons are usually a lot, then they are also contained in the advanced table of characters, from where are displayed using ALT codes or HTML-codes in the style of Unicode:

The most popular in modern web design can be called FontAwesome fonts, Glyphicons, Web Symbols and others. In addition, it is impossible not to mention the service of the Fontello, which allows you to independently assemble your own set of icons from popular symbolic fonts and save to a single file!

conclusions

Knowing how to insert into the text one or another symbol using ALT codes, you can always quickly and competently glorify any web page or arrange a document. In the extreme case, with them, you can decorate your profile in Vkontakte or classmates with hearts and sunshine, how many do it :)

Well, if you lack characters in standard fonts, you can always use alternatives that contain high-quality graphics instead of letters. True, in social networks such fonts, alas, do not paint, but you can apply them on your own website or blog! The main thing is not to overdo it;)

P.S. It is allowed to freely copy and quote this article if you specify an open active reference to the source and maintaining the authorship of Ruslana TRADER.

In the Windows operating system family, to enter the missing symbol, you need to press the left or right key ALT and, holding it down, dial a certain number using additional digital keyboardcalled numpad; Then let go of the key (alt) ... from here and implies the name of such combinations: Alt-codes or Alt sequence.

Try; For example, press the left alt and the number 1 on the NUMPAD "E - the smile (☺) must appear:

With the Russian keyboard layout, the combination is only working with leva Alt key; In English - with both: left and right.

Conditionally speaking, there are two types Alt codes: Without lead zero and with leading zero ...

Combinations without driving zero are in the interval from 1 to 255, then repeated; That is, Alt + 257 is the same as Alt + 1; Alt + 258 - Alt + 2 and so on (256 - a kind of border).

The main combinations with the leading zero are between 0128 to 0255 and differ mainly from combinations without a leading zero in that in different layouts of the keyboard they maybe Mean different characters.

The tables contain all the characters available in different systems. Therefore, if you need it Alt codesbrowse all the tables to the end. You will definitely find what you are looking for.

For systems using English, use code page 437. For most other systems using the Latin alphabet, the code page 850 is used. For a complete list, see the "Code Page" article.

These codes have become so well known that Microsoft was forced to use Windows-1252 in the new Windows 95 operating system and similar international kits in order to maintain the ability to use Alt codes. Holding Alt and dialing three numbers (first not zero) You can translate a symbol from the CP437 to the appropriate character in the Windows page code. By typing first lead 0 (zero), and then the number you can write a symbol from the Windows code page.

For example, from a combination of Alt + 161, "í" (Latin Letter I is with a sharp point from above), which is in the 161st position in CP437 and CP850. Alt + 0161 gives a "¡" symbol (an inverted exclamation mark), which is in the 161st position in Windows-1252.

When you go to Windows on Unicode Alt characters, the 0-leading codes have become even more popular. There is also another way: to enable it, the user must install or create a registry key HKCU \\ CONTROL PANEL \\ INPUT METHOD \\ ENABLEEXNUMPAD with the REG_SZ type and 1 value and restart the computer. After that, you can use the third method:

 • Keep the alt key. Press the "+" key on the numeric keypad.
 • Not releasing Alt Enter a hexadecimal number using a digital keyboard for numbers 0-9 and conventional keys to enter characters A-F.
For example, Alt + 11b will produce ě ("E" with a "lid").

Welcome to you, dear readers! Today I will tell you how to print special characters on the keyboard using the Alt key. If you do not quite understand the title of the article, what we are talking about, explaining in more detail.

There are symbols that are simply not on the keyboard, but they can often use enough (paragraph icon, arrogant, suit, heart). Immediately the question arises, how to write one or another character that is not on the keyboard. About how to do it, and it will be discussed in this article.

Here are examples of such characters:

☻☺ ♣♠◘○♀♪♂☼ ↕☼↓→§

Naturally, these are not all symbols, there are much more. You can find a complete table with these symbols just below.

And now I will tell you how these characters are printed.

So, already out of the name it is clear that we will use the alt key! But we will need other keys!

In the picture below, you can see all the keys that we need, and where they are:

So, to print one or another symbol, you must climb the ALT key and with the help of an additional panel with numbers to type the code you need (symbol codes can be taken from the table below). Moreover, it is important to follow the sequence, that is, if you first click 1, and then 2, then you will drop the character with number 12, and if you do the opposite: first 2, and then 1, then you will get out a completely different symbol number 21.

For example, the emoticon code (☺) - 1. So, to print a smiley, you need to press the ALT key and, without releasing it, click on "1" in an additional panel with numbers, then you want to release the ALT key and the symbol is printed.

To print the arrow (→) with code 26, you need to press the ALT key, then alternately press "2" first, then "6", then release the Alt key. The symbol is immediately printed.

Here is the table of the most common characters with their numbers:

It was the easiest way to print these characters, but not the only one.

There is still such a thing as a table of characters. No, it's not about the yellow table that is above. On each computer with Windows has such a "Symbol Table" application.

This application is in this place:

In this folder there is a bunch of all sorts of system files, among which "Charmap". In order not to look for it in the gigantic list, use the hot combination of the Ctrl + F keys and take into the search "Charmap". After starting the application, this table will open:

It is necessary to find and select the character you need, then copy it from the bottom line and insert the place you need. Also quite comfortable!
