Selection criteria

  • installing hard drives with any interface (IDE, SCSI) and any RAID controller. The operating system was installed on a separate hard disk. The remaining discs were combined into a RAID array with one logical disk for the entire volume of the array, the NTFS file system and the default cluster size. The RAID RAID level was to ensure the reliability of data storage (the RAID array of level 0 was not allowed);
  • use of an integrated or any other video adapter;
  • mandatory presence of a network adapter with support for the 1000Base-T interface;
  • mandatory presence of a device for reading CDs of any type;
  • mandatory installation of a 32-bit X86 Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1 operating system (English version);
  • installation at the discretion of the manufacturer of device drivers and additional OS setup, without changing the processor, memory and tire frequencies.

Since the testing of the servers is a long-term process, then for the purpose of aligning the conditions, all manufacturers have announced the selected configuration of the server before testing the first server and then they could not change it.

As a result, seven servers on the Intel platform and five on the AMD platform took part in testing. At the same time there was a wide variety of components applied in server servers. For the first time, servers on dual-core processors participated in testing. It should also be noted that with the advent of the NVIDIA NForce Professional series chipsets, the monopoly position of AMD on the server of server chipsets for Opteron processors was finally violated.

The Klondike PreSiDent 1500A server was tested outside the competition, since under the conditions of testing the company could provide only two servers. This server is interesting in that in its designs use Intel Xeon processors with a working frequency of 3.8 GHz, which are currently the most productive single-core server processors from Intel.

Testing technique

etodakka testing compared to previous similar tests has practically not changed: we compared the performance of the servers in the file and web server modes. A distinctive feature was only the application of Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 operating system on workstations and controller with all the updates that came out until September 2005, and on the server - Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP1. Recall that in previous testing, we abandoned the use of the Service Pack 2 update package, since when it is installed, the workstation-server workstation pair in the NetBench test has significantly decreased. The renewal has come out since then, the performance has become even higher.

To test the test, a stand consisting of two segments of the local network was collected. The first segment - Fast Ethernet 100Base-TX - formed 48 workstations, and the second - Gigabit Ethernet 1000Base-T - Server-Switch Channels and Controller - Switch. The computer controller synchronizes the work of all clients, collects information about the progress of the test and calculates the total network traffic between the server and the network. On the server itself, no programs are installed and does not start, which fully corresponds to the ideology of the file server.

During the test, the number of working clients has gradually increased, while the dependence of the network traffic is measured in megabits per second, from the number of working clients. The program theoretically supports up to 1000 customers, but it should be borne in mind that each client works in stressful mode and emulates the work of several dozen real customers.

Package WebBench 5.0.

WebBench package defines servers performance when using them as web servers.

On each of the computers connected to the local network, the client software is installed, which simulates the work of the Web browser. On the RAID server of the server, a working space is created common to all customers, imitating a real Web site with a volume of about 61 MB and consisting of a folder tree in which 6160 files of type * 1EXT1L, * .GIF and test executable files are placed, and in the CGI- folder BIN - dynamic executable modules. Modules implement a different query interface to server: CGI (Common Gateway Interface) and ISAPI (Internet Server API).

The Web server receives requests from clients, processes them and sends the answers. Depending on the type of request, it will be either sending a file from the workspace, or the data received by the server as a result of performing dynamic executable files.

Each client measures the server's response time to perform its requests, calculates the network traffic created by it, registers the number of queries executed and transmits the data obtained to the computer-controller, which synchronizes the operation of all customers and calculates the total result.

During the test, the number of working clients gradually increased so that the dependence of the queries processed by the server per second, and network traffic, measured in megabits per second, from the number of working clients.

WebBench 5.0 package provides the ability to test the Web server in normal and SSL mode. But since to install the SSL mode, you need to receive a security certificate, and the overwhelming majority of open Web servers work without an SSL mode, then this mode has not been used in these tests.

From the WebBench 5.0 package, three tests are performed that imitating various WEB server modes: Static (WebBench Static), dynamic with the SIMCGI.EXE module (WebBench CGI) and dynamic with the SIMISAPI.DLL module (WebBench ISAPI).

To increase the load on the server, the WebBench CGI and WebBench ISAPI tests were performed with increased to 4 and 10, respectively, the number of load generators on the client (set when setting the test by the Engines Per Client parameter). Values \u200b\u200bwere selected experimentally.

Test results

ak we have already noted last year, the performance of two-processor servers has increased so much that a gigabit network interface becomes a narrow server in the individual operating modes of the server, and this test confirmed this output. In three tests from four conducted (NetBench, WebBench Isapi and WebBench Static), the network interface has a network interface in leaders practically reaches 100%, and only in the CGI test of the server is limited to the processor capacity.

Almost all servers participating in our previous testing were collected in the corps of the pedestal type. However, this time we tried to formulate testing conditions in such a way as to interest manufacturers in providing servers collected in compact racks. We partially succeeded in a partially, and several servers took part in the tester, with a height of 1 U and 2 U, but their configuration was very far from the maximum possible and they could not compete with leaders. The best result among compact servers showed the DESTEN NAVIGATOR RM 7320U1L server.

NetBench test results
