The devices came to me, as you know, for a while, but after several days of use, I'm already inclined to replace my 535 Lumiya with one of the 640s. And, most likely, my choice will stop on a smaller model - Microsoft Lumia 640. Why I liked this model more, I will try to explain below.

First impression
So, in my hands and. Both smartphones are in blue. The Lumia 640 has a two-layer case: the upper layer of the side faces is translucent, rear body- just glossy blue. At a certain angle of incidence of light, the apparatus seems to glow. Unfortunately, there are fingerprints on the glossy back panel, but this is inevitable. In the Lumia 640 XL, the body material is matte, uniform throughout the entire area. A matte body is more practical in everyday life, there are not so many types of prints on it.

It is convenient to work and play on it only if you sit quietly in one place. It is almost impossible to use a smartphone on the go or in transport.

The screens in both models are the same: they are liquid crystal and are made according to IPS technology, ClearBlack, their resolution is 720x1280 pixels. However, mysteriously in Lumia 640 the display is more pleasant to the touch. It's smoother and more responsive or something. And compared to my previous Lumia 535, which still has problems with the screen (read about this in), it's just heaven and earth.
The screens in smartphones are covered protective glass Gorilla Glass 3, therefore, theoretically, scratches do not threaten him (but this is someone like :)). The picture in these Lumiyas is displayed perfectly, the colors are saturated, the screen does not "fade" in the sun. The Lumia 640 XL has a wider viewing angle in the sun. But in general, both smartphones behave perfectly in bright sun. Both models have a "Glance screen" feature where the clock and notification icons are displayed on the locked screen. You can unlock the devices by double tapping anywhere on the display.
The Lumia 640 has an 8MP camera. On the street in sunny weather, the pictures are excellent, but indoors in low light, the picture is no longer so good. Shooting in night mode, we get almost black and white images. The camera is equipped with autofocus and LED flash. As in other Lumiyas, if you were the owner of one before, new smartphones independently download previously installed applications, restore all settings, up to the alarm clock settings and the placement of tiles on the desktop. Thanks for that, Microsoft, I didn't have to manually search for all my applications and games.
The user interface is represented by two desktops: actually main screen and a list of applications. The size of the tiles can be changed.
The control buttons are on-screen, in the settings you can check the box so that the control panel is automatically hidden. It is not difficult to call it back to the screen: you just need to "pull" it with your finger from the bottom edge of the screen. Generally, screen buttons I don't really like it. In some apps and games, this control bar covers the bottom of the screen. However, the developers of applications for Windows Phone have probably already taken into account this feature of Windows phones and make the interface of their applications appropriate.

It is more compact, it is more convenient to use it, miraculously, with the same screen characteristics, its display is more pleasant to the touch. An important role is played by the presence of LTE support in the Lumia 640, provided, of course, that your operator cellular allows you to take advantage of this standard. Plus, the 640 XL is undoubtedly a 13-megapixel main camera and a wide-angle 5-megapixel front camera. For me personally, the lack of a physical camera button can be called a minus of these phones. But in general, both models are attractive in their own way.

Unfortunately, the quality of the Windows Phone implementation negates the hardware advantages of the device and makes it of little demand, and this is a given of the market. Why do you need a quality screen with high resolution if there are very few games for the platform, the video player is quite simple. The list of claims is endless. Someone may think that I am finding fault, but sales of Windows Phone have long been showing a steep peak, now the market share of this system is already about 3 percent and continues to fall. The main sales fall on budget devices, and in this sense Lumia 640 stands out from the general row.
In my opinion, this device may be of interest to anyone who wants to buy a balanced phone on Windows Phone, does not want to overpay for it, and is sensitive to the camera. If it's not the screen resolution that matters to you, but its size, then you should look at the Lumia 535, the devices are perceived as very close in spirit.
This device is similar to 640 XL only in the name, the camera differs (13 megapixels in XL), bigger battery(3000 versus 2500 mAh), better front camera, but the same chipset. The screen has a diagonal of 5.7 inches, but the same resolution.

In my opinion, the phablet Microsoft failed at all, the device is very strange and niche. Moreover, it is a niche one even for the Lumia line, which makes it an endangered species on a market scale even before the start of sales. But the Lumia 640 may not receive big sales, after all, it may be of interest to fans of such phones.

An ordinary 5-inch phone with rather compact dimensions - 141.3x72.2x8.8 mm, weight - 145 grams. It fits perfectly in the hand, it hides in the pockets and is invisible.
The case is made of glossy plastic, some may not like them, but I have no complaints. A matter of taste and choice. Bright enough, shiny, suitable for young people just right, and girls love these colors.

On the top there is a 3.5 mm jack, on the bottom there is a regular microUSB connector. On the right side there is a paired volume rocker, right there is an on / off button. The speaker output is on the back, close to the camera and LED flash.
It is easy to open the device, the body is pulled towards itself, it is like a cover. The design, proven on many models, is very reliable. Inside you will see a battery, as well as two microSIM slots plus a memory card slot.
From the engineering point of view, there are no complaints about the device, it is quite good.

But the 640 and 640XL are doing great with the balance of display area and bezels! The Lumia 640 finally has the same top and bottom bezels and is quite small, while the XL also has a tiny bottom, smaller than the top! Previously, it was the other way around, and it looked disharmonious.
Both devices have on-screen control keys. They can be removed manually so that they do not reduce the display area. An interesting nuance - they are removed and returned to the screen with the same movement - with your finger across the screen from bottom to top, which is somewhat annoying at first. It seems to be logical - to activate the button panel "pulling" it from the bottom to the top, but to remove it - on the contrary, by moving from top to bottom ...
Display
Both devices have juicy IPS screens with the same 1280x720 HD resolution, double-tap wake-up and glowing clock.
At the same resolution, the Lumia 640 has a smaller diagonal, respectively, smaller size a single pixel, so the image is theoretically "louder". However, the difference in the diagonals is small and the differences are not noticeable. The difference in brightness and viewing angles is much more noticeable - the screens for the "younger and older brothers" were obviously cut from more than one "IPS-sheet" - the 640 XL display is noticeably brighter than the 640, the XL has more viewing angles. At the same time, the increased brightness of the 640 XL screen makes at the maximum color level a little "overexposed", as in an overexposed photo, while in the 640 the colors remain more natural.

In many large-size wide-display Lumiyas, I have repeatedly encountered very weak cameras. V this case all the way around, and somehow closer to mass logic: the Lumia 640 is equipped with an average 8-megapixel camera, while the XL's older brother has a 13-megapixel camera, which even visually looks more solid, its module protrudes from the body like a mound, giving the device the solidity of a camera phone. However, in reality, everything turned out to be completely different!
Surprisingly, the cameras shoot VERY THE SAME, despite the significant difference in megapixels, and the 640 also works noticeably faster, which I was surprised to find out, filming cheerful rats in a pet store! It's easy to make sure of this - the same pictures were specially taken with both devices.

Large segments from frames of a 13-megapixel camera look, if not worse, then certainly not better than an 8-megapixel one ... The question arises - how to interpret the result? Does the Lumia 640 shoot better than it should, or the Lumia 640 XL worse than you'd expect? It's hard to say for sure ... With similar processors, processing the data stream from an 8-megapixel matrix is certainly easier than from a 13-megapixel one - this, perhaps, should explain the greater nimbleness of the younger model. And personally, I (subjectively, of course) would say that it is the 640 that shoots better than it should, rather than vice versa. And the 640 XL may have different, and not the best image processing algorithms and optics.

The devices have, of course, different batteries: the 640 XL has 2500 mAh, the 640 XL has 3000 mAh. Let's conduct a simple and visual test, which I traditionally use to assess the efficiency of battery use - we charge the battery to 100%, reboot the device to clear the memory of clogging programs, turn off everything wireless interfaces, except cellular, set the screen brightness and volume to maximum. We start the movie in AVI format lasting 1 hour 23 minutes and weighing 1.45 GB. After completing the movie, we look at the remaining battery charge:
In principle, with some effort with both smartphones, it is quite possible to hold out for two days away from the outlet, but, of course, with XL it will be easier.
