If you don’t have enough of the opportunities that Android gives, or the gadget started to slow down and “fail”, then it’s time to change the firmware. Flashing an Android device is performed at service centers. However, it is not cheap, and it is not always possible to prove that the problems arose through no fault of yours and to ensure that the work is done under warranty. At the same time, you can do the flashing yourself. Just read the instructions carefully and follow them carefully.

What is firmware and when is it needed

Firmware refers to the version of the operating system (OS). mobile device. Replacing a version or part of it is more accurately called a flashing. It is required in two cases: if the modest capabilities of the official version of the OS do not suit you, or if there are problems in the operation of the gadget. The reason for slowdowns, application freezes, spontaneous reboots and other failures may be the installation of third-party applications or infection with viruses that can penetrate from the Internet, from unverified media, or when connected to an infected computer. Reinstalling the system will help to cope with these problems, but if it fails during it, in new firmware there are bugs or it does not match your device, there will be even more trouble. Only accuracy and the use of reliable sources of software will help out.

Firmware are single-file and multi-file. In addition to the official ones, there are also versions of Android created by third-party developers. They are called "custom" - custom, which can be translated as "made to order" or "to the taste of the user." Compared to simple and reliable official versions, custom ones provide the sophisticated user with advanced features, but at the same time make it easier for viruses to penetrate the device. Installing custom firmware permanently voids your warranty, as the manufacturer cannot be held responsible for versions they haven't tested, but you'll get more features as a reward for taking the risk.

The firmware also differs in its content: it can be the firmware of the system kernel, modem or Recovery, i.e. recovery mode. In official Android versions on most devices recovery mode is responsible only for resetting and restoring the system, and in custom ones it also performs other functions, including flashing the OS, creating backups etc.

Preparing for flashing

If the Recovery Mode of your gadget is capable of flashing, you can download it to the device and execute it on it. A more typical case is when flashing is done under the control of a personal computer (PC) or laptop.

Firmware search

Required for firmware special program for a PC that organizes the flashing process. The best way- the Odin program, which is used to flash their devices at Samsung.

Download to your computer:

    Odin software: Version 1.85 is recommended for Samsung models released before 2011, version 1.85 for devices from 2011-2014. - version 3.07, until 2017 - 3.10.6, 2017 - 3.11.1. Do not use third parties, including Russian versions programs, a failure in them can cost you a gadget turned into a “brick”;

    drivers for connecting a computer with a gadget from Samsung;

  • official firmware, which can be found on the websites samfirmware.com, samsung-updates.com, sampro.pl, live.samsung-updates.com. There are also Samsung Firmware Linker or samfirm firmware download wizards. The wizard will find and download at maximum speed the latest firmware for your gadget by model number. The firmware should be placed on the computer in a folder whose address does not contain Cyrillic letters (you can c:\samsung\GTI9300, but not c:\users\Vova\Downloads\GTI9300).

Installing Odin

After you download the necessary software, install the Odin program and follow these steps:

  1. Copy all personal information (contacts, ringtones, pictures, etc.) to internal or external card SD or PC. After flashing, all your settings will be lost.
  2. If you have already installed the drivers old version, they should be removed first. When you first connect the gadget, the computer OS will not be able to find the drivers and will ask where to look for them. Give up automatic search and specify the path to the folder where you saved the drivers.
  3. Prepare a USB cable. An important condition for successful flashing is to use the original USB cable. Preferably - the cord supplied with the device.
  4. During flashing, it is unacceptable to turn off the computer, mobile device or disconnect them. Therefore, the gadget must be charged to the level of 80-100%. The computer must be connected through the device uninterruptible power supply. Valid and another option is a laptop with a well-charged battery.
  5. For 5 minutes, while the flashing process is in progress, protect the devices from children and animals.

Flashing Samsung with Odin

When all necessary actions have been done, you can proceed directly to the flashing.

Preparing Samsung for flashing

Flashing a gadget from Samsung is performed in the Downloading mode, that is, downloading.

  1. To go into it, turn off the device, and then hold down 3 buttons: volume down, central (Home, "Home") and on or off.
  2. When the warning appears on the display, release all buttons and press the volume up.

If you cannot switch to download mode, then in this case you will have to use the ADB (Android Debug Bridge) tool.

With your Samsung in download mode, connect it to your computer. When the computer OS connects the drivers, open the Odin program. The window at the top left will turn yellow or blue, the com-port number will appear in it, indicating that the gadget is connected.

Further actions depend on the type of firmware.

Placing firmware files in windows Odin

Methods Samsung firmware differ depending on the number of files.

  1. If the firmware is single-file, press the PDA or AP button and find its file in the window that opens.
  2. If the firmware is multi-file, then, depending on the available files, press the button:
  3. If only the modem needs to be flashed, press the PHONE or CP button and find the firmware file.
  4. The kernel firmware or Recovery is installed with the PDA or AP button.

Firmware launch

  1. To start the firmware in the Odin program at the top left, leave 2 checkmarks in the Auto Reboot boxes - automatic reboot after the firmware and F.Reset Time - reset the firmware counter. The remaining buttons cannot be touched, they are intended for developers.
  2. Click the Start button.
  3. Flashing lasts from 2 to 5 minutes. The program will report its completion by issuing RESET / PASS in the upper window. The elapsed time will be listed below.

  4. The gadget will restart. Disconnect it from the computer. After a successful reboot, you can relax: you succeeded.

Custom firmware

Custom firmware can be found on the developers' websites:

  • CyanogenMod (converted to Lineage);
  • MIUI;
  • OMNI ROM;
  • Paranoid Android - official and amateur;
  • AOKP;
  • Slim ROM;
  • P.A.C.MAN;
  • Carbon ROM;
  • Resurrection Remix;
  • PRO-BAM (AOSB).

There are no general firmware suitable for all devices. Look for the firmware for your model. Read the instructions carefully before installation. You will probably need to prepare your device for firmware.

Flashing crashes

If there was a failure during the firmware or after it was completed, the device did not reboot normally, you should use the tool provided for this case by the manufacturer: perform a “Hard reboot” ( hard reset). This mode returns the device to the initial, factory settings.

How to use adb program

The ADB program (Android Debug Bridge, that is, the Android debugging bridge) is part of software tool Android SDK. The SDK is available for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. You don't need a full SDK, it's enough to limit yourself to a more compact ADB that allows you to do a lot on your Android device, including putting it into boot or recovery mode.

For Windows, there is a more convenient program based on ADB. This is a utility ADB Run developed by Vitaly Shipilov.

Flashing a Samsung device is easy. You just need to remember that wrong actions can lead to failure, and you will have to start all over again or, having suffered with flashing, contact the service center. In the worst case, the gadget will turn into a cobblestone. Therefore, do not use unverified programs, a damaged or non-original USB cable, and keep an eye on the charge level. If you exclude the possibility of these problematic moments, the firmware will be installed successfully.

Flashing smartphones is needed to fix critical errors– the gadget may be attacked by viruses or system failures. For Samsung with operating system(OS) Android The easiest and most reliable program to install a new OS is Odin.

Odin was released specifically in order to install new versions of the OS on Samsung - this is a utility released for a computer (PC) that can revive a gadget in a few minutes by installing a new version of Android on it or by downloading individual components (if you do not need to flash everything) of the system .

What are the versions of the program

The version of the utility will depend on which device is used - what more modern gadget, especially fresh version utilities will do.

The following releases of Odin are available to users (the most stable ones are indicated):

  • 3.11.1 - all flagship gadgets 2017-2018 of the year.
  • 3.10 - gadgets released before 2017 of the year.
  • 3.07 - all Samsung released between 2012 and 2014 year.
  • 1.85 - for real "oldies" produced before 2012 of the year.

One is not only suitable for smartphones, but also for tablets Samsung firms. You can also find a Russian-language program on the network - several versions of 3.12 are presented for download on the w3bsit3-dns.com website, but you need to use them at your own peril and risk. There have been cases of Samsung turning into a brick, so it's better to use the official English-language distribution.

Installing Odin on PC

The installation algorithm of the program itself is simple - it is necessary unload the distribution to your computer and unpack (usually comes in the archive). Better do it in separate folder and put it on the C drive, just for convenience. The downloaded firmware that needs to be downloaded is also unpacked there.

The archive usually contains two files - for configuration and standard Setup.

To start, just select a file with the .exe extension and execute from administrator name. Install in the usual way not necessary.

Important! Files should not be in the Russian-language section, and there should not be Russian names on the path to them. It's better to create the Samsung folder directly in C to exclude the username or "New Folder" names.

Basic Options

Odin can:

  1. flash bootloader systems - in the Bootloader column.
  2. Install new core, Recovery and, in fact, the system - in the PDA column.
  3. Customize system for a specific region - in the CSC column.
  4. Make modem replacement– column Phone.
  5. Redistribute and markup from scratch Partition - Re-Partition.
  6. Reset data about the number of device firmware - F. Reset Time.
  7. Reboot phone after installation new version– Auto Reboot.

It also shows the whole process of downloading Android components and installs both official and custom archives.

Downloading and installing drivers

Only new files for the gadget and the program itself are not enough - for Samsung to be defined in the system, it is necessary download drivers for it on PC. In many cases, this happens automatically when the device is connected via a USB port.

However, for correct operation utilities, drivers must be updated (requires the latest version). You can get these automatically when you install Kies or Smart Switch. For this:

All current driver software will pull up from the network automatically after the first launch (do not uncheck the box at the end of the installation or use the shortcut) and connect the gadget to the computer via USB.

You can also download the driver simply from any site on the Internet - for example, for developers, but it is still recommended to use official downloaders to avoid problems.

Create a backup

A backup will be needed if you want to save all the information from your phone - especially contacts and photos. When reinstalling delete app data, but all personal files can be saved by first downloading a copy somewhere on your computer.

You can do this using the already installed Smartswitch or Kies, or use the Google cloud.

The Google cloud saves everything - including phone settings. Uploading can be done directly from the gadget:

Important! With this method, only those contacts that were linked to google account. If any contacts are in the phone's memory, they will be deleted.

If you want to do upload to computer- use Kies or Smart Switch (below is the instruction for this program):

Enable download mode

It’s still impossible to start flashing just like that - Samsung must be launched in a special boot mode (often called or Bootloader).

If your phone is connected to your computer, disconnect it now.

Important! Miscellaneous Gadgets go into download mode in different ways.

On new devices

Flagships with buttonbixby you can send it to the mode like this:

On regular devices

Not flagships and the rest of Samsung without buttonbixby you can send it to the mode like this:

On devices before 2011

The instruction is similar to the previous one, only you need to hold down two buttons:

If it doesn't help

Such button clamps may not be possible for everyone, so there is a program ADB RUN able to send the device to download mode via PC:

Odin Mode

Unlike conventional Android gadgets, Samsung devices have an additional bootloader mode - Odin Mode. In fact, this is an analogue of Fasboot Mode or Bootloader on other Android devices. It allows you to use third party software from your computer for flashing.

To enter it, you need:

How to flash

If the drivers were loaded using Kies, it is recommended to remove it and clean the computer with CCleaner before starting manipulations in Odin.

The first general firmware steps through Odin look like this:

Single file

To unload the firmware packed into one file (when all options are in one), use the button AP orPDA:

The program will start flashing the device - in the tab Log it will show what is happening, and a line will run at the top operation.

When the process ends, the last line in the Log field will sound like Allthreadscompleted, and a green display will appear at the top of the field with the inscription Pass.

The whole process usually takes 2 to 10 minutes.

Multifile

When the archive contains more than one file, it means that all components will be installed separately. It is used for serious scaling and serious system failures.

All first steps are identical to the process of installing a single-file firmware. In a folder, it usually looks like a set of 5 elements (the first characters of the names are consonant with the Odin columns - this is where each of them will need to be uploaded):

So, the data is unpacked, the utility is ready and enabled, we start unloading:

Important! Users of new versions of Odin and Android should note that the names of the buttons have changed in later versions:

PIT file

PIT is used when you need to re- split memory into sections. It can be loaded both with a simple firmware, and with a complex one - this additional option, which, however, is better not to use for minor problems with Android. Incorrectly broken sections of memory can “brick” the smartphone completely.

To install in this way, follow the following sequence:

Custom

Installing an unofficial (custom) system is done in order for Android to work better and be more optimized.

Before proceeding with the installation, you will need to download archives - for example, Linage OS or Omni Rom, and Recovery TWRP.

The first login to a device with a custom system will take about 10 minutes - this should not be scared. Next, there will be an opportunity set up the system and use as usual.

Individual component settings

Odin also allows you to download new versions of the system for individual components - for example, flash only the modem or only Recovery.

This is done by the same algorithm, it is simply filled only one column– Phone (for modem) or PDA (for kernel).

Possible errors when flashing through Odin
