The study of the basic characteristics of memory modules. Collapsible aluminum radiator

With the release of available solutions based on the nehalem microarchitecture, the memory of the DDR2 standard will finally lose its relevance and over time will completely leave the scene, as happened with the first DDR type. The overclocking potential of the currently present modules in the market leaves much to be desired and practically no different in solutions of various manufacturers. Sometimes there are interesting products at reasonable prices, capable of working at sufficiently high frequencies, but it is rather an exception than the phenomenon that is massive. Naturally, to disclose the capabilities of modern Core 2 processors, it is necessary to level the deterrent factor in the form of a weak overclocking of memory, so the transition to DDR3 is more than justified. But this is subject to the presence of a motherboard capable of functioning steadily at an increased frequency of the FSB bus. For Core i7. new standard The memory is the only option, and the change of platform in AMD is still less justified. Over time, of course, the situation will change in best side, I can still be repelled from your preferences and opportunities, choosing one of the platforms with DDR3 memory.

IN this material We will get together with three sets of DDR3 memory with a working frequency of 1600 MHz and a total of 4 GB each from the well-known OCZ company.

As you already understood, the sets are not intended to work as part of the Core I7 base system, which due to the limitations of the memory controller is designed for the supply voltage of high-frequency modules of only 1.65 V. The sets under consideration function at a voltage of 1.9 V and without problems can Be set to cards for Core 2 or AMD processors with support for this type.

OCZ OCZ3X16004GK (Intel Extreme Series, PC2-12800, 2x2GB)

First consider the OCZ3X16004GK kit from the Intel Extreme series (XMP Edition), which is designed for the LGA775 platform with the Extreme Memory Profiles (Extreme Memory Profiles) - EPP analogue, but for DDR3 memory. Naturally, memory can work without this function, only the tunes of timings and supply voltage will have to manually produce.

The modules are supplied in a small blister, with a blue insertion-instructions for installing memory in the system.

The modules are made on the PCB of black and equipped with branded black XTC radiators (Xtreme Thermal Convection), which are made in the form of a mesh that improves the manufacturer's cooling efficiency of memory microcircuits. On each side of the radiator is the logo Intel Core 2 Extreme.

The design of the radiator is not solid - it consists of an aluminum mesh and a rim, glued as the same thermal carrier as the main part of the radiator to the memory chips.

From the identification signs on the PCB, you can find HJ M1 94V-0, which has nothing to do with BrainPower, printed circuit boards From which are used for sheproker modules.

On the label is also a minimum of information: the operating frequency is 1600 MHz, the total set of 4 GB, timings 7-7-7-24 (TRAS information is taken from the company's official website) and voltage 1.9 V.

But SPD is much more detailed to talk about memory. When loading a system for default, the bar is defined as DDR3-1066 with delays 7-7-7-16 and a voltage of 1.5 V. When activating XMP profile, which are also two, memory will already work at its nominal frequency with timings 7- 7-7-28 and 1.9 V voltage (Enthusiast profile). Our ASUS P5E3 Deluxe WiFi-AP test board based on Intel X38 Express chipset for this raised the FSB bus frequency and lowered the multiplication factor core processor 2 E8500, which gave the final 3.2 GHz on it.

If a higher frequency is needed, you can activate the Extreme profile and the modules will be able to function at 1777 MHz with delays 9-9-9-32. Also available in both cases various combinations of frequencies and timings.

OCZ OCZ3P16004GK (Platinum Series, PC2-12800, 2X2GB)

OCZ3P16004GK kit is a representative old Series Platinum and comes in the same blister as the previous set, but, of course, already with another liner.

Black modules are equipped with ordinary polished radiators, on both sides of which the letter Z is bangl with a small number 3.

The design of the radiator is all the same: the mesh and the rim connected by thermal carrier.

According to the characteristics, this memory is no different from the Intel Extreme modules and is calculated on the frequency of 1600 MHz with timings 7-7-7-24 and a voltage of 1.9 V.

SPD is prescribed only standard delays and frequencies up to 1066 MHz. There is no XMP profile, and to work on the stated characteristics necessary settings You will have to do it yourself.
Interestingly, the SPD is spelled out of another time of timings for the frequency of 1200 MHz, which can be seen by the MemSet utility.

OCZ OCZ3RPR16004GK (REAPER HPC SERIES, PC2-12800, 2X2GB)

And the last set - OCZ3RPR16004GK, already refers to the Reaper series, with which we met in a recent material on the DDR2 memory from OCZ. The modules are packed in a major blister with a similar liner-instruction as a set of an old standard.

The planks are made on a black PCB, each of which is equipped with a corporate radiator with a heat tube transmitting the heat to the additional small radiator.

The main radiator consists of two halves - the heat tube is attached to one, and the other is a conventional aluminum plate. The whole design is connected by two screws and is additionally glued on both sides to the memory chips.

The printed circuit board, unlike more available modules, from BrainPower (on each bar, you can find B63URCBB 0.70 labeling), which is used for the production of 1600 megago memory of 2 GB.

The characteristics of this kit are the same as in the memory of the Intel Extre and Platinum series: total 4 gigabytes, operating frequency 1600 MHz, timings 7-7-7-24 and supply voltage 1.9 V.

Information in the SPD is the same as at Platinum Edition modules, without any changes.
In fact, in this case, it is necessary to overpay behind the famous PCB and a more efficient cooling system.

Test configuration and acceleration technique

Our test configuration had the following form:

  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 (3.16 GHz, 6 MB, FSB 333 MHz);
  • Motherboard: ASUS P5E3 Deluxe WiFi-AP (Intel X38);
  • Video card: ASUS EN8800GS TOP (GeForce 8800 GS 384MB);
  • Cooler: Noctua NH-U12P;
  • Hard disk: samsung sp2504c (250 GB, SATA2);
  • Power supply: Tagan BZ 1300W (1300 W).
Testing was conducted in the medium Windows Vista. Home Premium X64 SP2. To check the stability of overclocked memory modules, the OCCT V3.0.1 program was used with a 20-minute test run.

Parameters "Static Read Control" and "Transaction Booster" in BIOS Setup Cards turned off, the level "Relax Level" was exhibited at the value 4 (various values \u200b\u200bwere also used if the specified did not achieve desired result), which made it possible to get a Performance Level, equal to 8 or 9. The voltage on the chipset was 1.45 V, on the FSB bus - 1.4 V. The remaining settings - by default. During testing, the modules were blown in a 120 mm fan.

The overclocking potential has been found out for three sets of timings: 7-7-7-21, 8-8-8-24 and 9-9-9-27. On the this moment time they are the most relevant. The Command Rate parameter was 1t.

The results of overclocking

The OCZ3X16004GK memory kit for timings 7-7-7-21 and the voltage of 1.9 V was able to function at a frequency of 1665 MHz. After increasing the voltage to 2, the threshold moved to 1701 MHz, which is quite good. The following in the list, the set of voltage has not reacted, and its total frequency was 1693 MHz. For Riper, the result was only 1645 MHz, and after increasing the voltage, the frequency rose by another 44 MHz, which is extremely few compared to more accessible sets.

With delays of the type 8-8-8-24 and 9-9-9-27, OCZ3P16004GK kits and OCZ3RPR16004GK were refused to work, and the first one was able to take a test at a frequency of 1709 MHz. The second XMP profile, which is available at the memory of the Intel Extreme series, was also not workable. Perhaps, 1,700 MHz are the limit for the chips used, but the strange memory behavior with less aggressive delays allows you to think about some incompatibility of memory with the motherboard used in the test stand.

RESULTS

Starting from this material, on the pages of our site, we will increasingly pay attention to the popularity of DDR3 memory, which in the last year enough has decreased in price so that it can be recommended to build not only the Hi-End system, but the mid-level PC. And considering that it will soon be supported by four platforms, the conclusion about the change of testing priority suggests itself. Of course, some decisions of obsolete type we will sometimes test, but most likely, with rare exceptions, since the potential for their long time has been studied and in lately They can no longer surprise any special.

With regard to the considered memory sets, during the timings of 7-7-7-21, they showed very good results - about 1650-1700 MHz. This frequency is enough to overclock any processor or increase system speed. But with big delays, someone completely refused to work. Most likely, the problem lies either at the limit of chips themselves, because they work on their nominal frequency of 1600 MHz at a voltage of 1.9 V, or in the test motherboard.

Thank the following companies for the provided test equipment:

  • Eletek for the memory sets OCZ OCZ3X16004GK, OCZ3P16004GK and OCZ3RPR16004GK;
  • Asus for maternal asus board P5E3 Deluxe WiFi-AP;
  • Master of Groups aSUS video card EN8800GS TOP 384MB;

It is unlikely that some of the overclockers today have doubts about choosing a type random access memory For a new platform. The fact that DDR SDRAM has long been in the market, you can challenge with great difficulty. Comparable or minimally different from DDR in the most side of the cost of DDR2 modules, the mass distribution of the favorite people of AMD platforms with Socket AM2, a huge range of DDR2 SDRAM for any requirements and wallets, and finally gradual popularization among platform overclockers with Intel Core 2 DUO The main, but far from the only reasons for reducing the demand of DDR memory.

In today's Material, we offer you an overview and testing of nine pairs of 2 x 1GB RAM Modules from one of the models of the mod in the SDRAM market - OCZ Technology.

advertising

To the question why the volume of modules was selected in 1 GB, I think the answer is obvious. Constantly growing requirements software And games to computer hardware resources have now led to the minimum recommended volume. installed memory In the system equal to 2 GB. I do not argue that on 1 GB you will not be able to play modern games. Can. Even at 512 MB, most likely, you can run them, that's just about comfort in the game you can forget. In addition, according to preliminary estimates, in order to play comfortably in superpopular before its release of Windows Vista, it is not even two, but most likely the whole four gigabytes of memory.

In addition, in my opinion, when purchasing a new system Block And limitations in the means are promising to take no 2 modules of 512 MB, but one volume in 1 GB. After some time, consulting the second module, you will not only win in price, but also in stability and acceleration, since all overclockers are known that the platform with four installed modules has a lower overclocking potential than with a pair.

Perhaps lyrical deviations and reservations are enough .. I propose to return to the topic of today's article and unconventional to start with the description of the test configuration and testing techniques.

1. Test configuration, toolkit and testing technique

All operational memory was tested only in two-channel mode on the following system unit configuration:

Selection of high-performance memory for desktop computerThe case is quite painstaking and responsible, which is primarily due to the need to ensure maximum stability when working at high frequency, especially when using freelance modes, where each element of the computer is critical, including memory. In the portable computers sector, this problem It is not so acute, however, the active development of mobile technologies, increasing the working frequency and reducing the internal space of the laptop, requires no less thorough approach when choosing a memory, which is particularly related to laptop collectors, which sometimes establish cheap nameless memory in order to save, explaining that when Working in staffing cannot happen, in which, of course, right, however ...

We, buyers of expensive laptops, wish that our mobile assistant would not only allow the maximum performance, but also provided maximum stability in various conditions of use.

Today we will introduce you to the OCZ memory of the Value series, which includes modules with the optimal ratio of price and performance. Despite the fairly low, for the OCZ price, these modules use a number of specific technologies, such as the ULN2 PCB, which will noticeably reduce the level of electrical noise, which positively affects the stability of work, especially offline.

So, in our review, three types of memory modules are involved, intended for use in different types Laptops: from ultra portable models based on Centrino technology, up to high-performance class of desktop replacement, based on mobile versions desktop decisions and based on modern Sonoma and AMD TURION ™ 64 technologies, which use fast memory DDR2-533 and DDR333 / 400, respectively.

Before we proceed to study the possibilities of the presented memory modules, we would like to make several comments regarding the possibilities for setting memory parameters in the laptop. In almost all models of laptops in BIOS, there is no possibility to adjust memory parameters, which would allow you to take advantage of all the advantages of faster and high-quality OCZ modules. Therefore, the only advantage that you get from the use of OCZ memory is a large stability, less heat release, and, accordingly, the increase in time autonomous work.

Ocz. PC2700 Value. Series.

The memory of the DDR333 standard today remains one of the most popular in the portable computers sector. This type of memory will be especially relevant when using laptop models based on CENTRINO classical technology, where the memory of the DDR266 standard is still used, which significantly limits the capabilities of modern high-performance Pentium-M processors. To solve this problem, we strongly recommend using the OCZ PC2700 Value Series memory.

OCZ PC2700 Value Series memory modules are based on low timing chips (2.5-4-4-8), which made it possible to slightly increase productivity on laptops using SPD data.

By the way, the results of our tests show that the translation of the Centrino platform for DDR333 memory provides a noticeable productivity gain that will be particularly noticeable when using processors with a frequency above 2GHz. There may be a question here, and why not use the memory of the DDR 400 immediately, it will theoretically, it will achieve even greater productivity. Unfortunately, Classical Technology CENTRINO supports only DDR333, so the DDR 400 will be meaningless.

Ocz. PC. 3200 Value. Series.

The memory of the DDR 400 standard is currently used in some HI - END laptops, which are based on mobile versions Desktop chipsets and processors, such as VIA K8T800 for Mobile AMD Athlon ™ 64 processor, as well as in new AMD TURION ™ 64 platforms. The presented OCZ PC 3200 Value Series modules are based on Samsung chips with low timings 2.5-4-4-8

Comparison of the OCZ PC 3200 Value Series memory with NO-NAME modules, have demonstrated some increase in performance in most applications, when using rigidly specified synchronization parameters in the BIOS. In case your laptop allows you to use SPD data, either the ability to change memory settings, then you will receive a few more percent while maintaining 100% stability.

In our opinion, using the OCZ PC 3200 Value Series memory is particularly relevant in the laptops of the "Replacement PC" class, which use mobile versions of desktop chipsets and processors. Here you can take advantage of the full frequency potential offered by OCZ PC 3200 Value Series modules.

Ocz. PC.2 4200 Value. Series.

And finally, a new for mobile sector, the type of memory DDR2 533. It is used as part of a new mobile technology Intel Sonoma, where it can work both in one-channel and in two channel mode, which made it possible to significantly increase productivity compared to the classical CENTRINO technology.

To create a high-performance and stable mobile platform, OCZ proposes to use PC2 4200 Value Series modules. These memory modules are based on high-performance ELPDA chips that have timings 4-4-4-8, which makes it possible to make an assumption about a possible increase in the performance of the mobile platform.

However, given the specific features of the BIOS, which uses rigidly specified frequency parameters, take advantage of these advantages until it turn out, but high stability and reduced heat generation are guaranteed that it will have a positive effect on battery life. Increased performance will be noticeable only in case of forced change with special utilitiesOr in future laptop models, where it is possible to use the full potential used by memory modules. Although, as you can see, in this case, the increase in productivity is practically not noticeable, which is also due to the specific features of the DDR2 memory.

Conclusion

As you might notice, the performance of the OCZ memory does not significantly exceed the performance of other modules, including No-Name, which is associated with the use of rigidly specified synchronization parameters that limit the capabilities of high-performance memory chips, as well as some architectural features Modern laptops (type of processor and memory controller). However, as we have already told above, performance in mobile platform Not the most important thing is much more important, - stability offline, which directly depends on the quality of memory, where OCZ is an undisputed leader.

We thank Svega Computer, for the OCZ memory modules provided for testing

"CompanyOcz. The Technology Group was created by enthusiasts for enthusiasts"As such words, the official site of the manufacturer meets with such words. A memory kit that fell into our test laboratory serves as a" typical "example of this concept. But to name OCZ products, whether it is the most inexpensive RAM or a top-end power supply," typical "will be great delusion. . Any product with the "OCZ" logo will probably be outstanding both in terms of design and in terms of design. technical characteristics (Well, of course, it will be noticeably knocked out of the usual framework;)).

Now (if you have not yet been familiar with this brand), when you have formed the first impression, it is time to start the object of the narrative.

This PC2-8500 set is in the middle of the OCZ Blade Series. The series includes both slower sets (PC-6400 or DDR2-800) and faster (PC-9600 or DDR2-1200), as well as modules operating on low supply voltage. The test set is designed for "moderate enthusiasts", if you can express it, because it still corresponds to the upper standard frequency bar for DDR2 memory according to JEDEC Recommendations. Recall, Joint Electronic Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) - Joint Engineering Board electronic devices USA. Yes, and the total capacity is 4 GB, which has already become a reasonable value for a modern productive computer.

We meet by clothes: design and packaging

Supply of all sets of OCZ Blade is carried out in plastic blisters, allowing you to see the modules without difficulty. Here we mention a few signs of original OCZ kits, so that you could at the very first stage of memory selection to make sure that you do not have a fake.

The first feature is high-quality printing on the packaging.

The second feature is an information sticker pasted on each module, which is easily noticeable by holographic emblems "OCZ", and even through plastic boxing.

Third sign - availability protective film On the logo on the module radiator. These three features will make sure for sure in the genuine product affiliation of the OCZ brand.

The memory bar is made on black textolite (found on green) and "dressed" into the same black radiator covers. The design of the heat dissipaters are collapsible, on two screws.

The material from which radiators is made are quite standard - this is an aluminum alloy. But the design itself is high, so on the system boards with a similar location of the memory slots to the processor socket, problems may arise with the installation of some overall coolers. Approximately half the height of the module itself comes out the "comb" of the radiator. It should be noted that the forms of radiators from different models of memory even inside the Blade line differ, but in general, the belonging to one series is easily traced.

Each module is 16 DRAM microcircuits, which is also quite a common phenomenon for 2 GB planks.

We accompany the mind: characteristics and acceleration potential

The marking contained on module stickers - Ocz2D1066LV4GK - we have been decrypted (we will immediately arrange, the official website of the manufacturer does not provide information on this basis) as follows:

  • OCZ - Memory Manufacturer;
  • 2D - bilateral placement of memory chips on the module;
  • 1066 - effective frequency, MHz;
  • LV - Low Voltage, reduced supply voltage (in fact, this set should not be related to this category, but the proof will be given to our assumption);
  • 4GK - 4 Gigabyte Kit, a set with a total capacity of 4 GB.

But the CPU-Z information utility says that in the SPD microcircuit instead of the standard PC-8500 value (1066 MHz DDR) contains a non-standard PC-8900 profile (1110 MHz DDR).

This contains the first confirmation of the accessory of the test set of OCZ to the category of energy efficient memory: recommended supply voltage Even for the most high-speed PC-8900 mode with timings 5-5-5-18 is only 1.8 V. We see this for the first time. And there is a discrepancy of this information with data on module stickers, which report that at a lower speed of PC-8500 and the same timings 5-5-5-18 the supply voltage should be 2.2 V.

Looking ahead, let's say that the information contained in SPD has been confirmed in practice during the measurement of overclocking potential. OCZ memory easily earned at an appropriate frequency with specified timings and supply voltage.

The method of testing the memory has already been established, and we have accumulated some database on the acceleration potential of various RAM standard DDR2.

Several combinations of timing and supply voltage values \u200b\u200bwere selected to comprehensively outline the potential of the modules under consideration. So, acceleration was carried out with the following settings:

  1. basic timings 5-5-5-18 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS);
  2. 6-7-7-25 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS;
  3. 4-4-4-12 (Cl-RCD-RP-RAS).

Each set of timings was combined with two values \u200b\u200bof the supply voltage - 1.8 V. and relatively safe 2.2 B. The value of the timing that strongly affects the performance of the memory subsystem, Command Rate - 2T.

To test stability in the overclocked state, the Prime95 V.25.11 utility was used:

As practice shows, memory modules different manufacturersEven with identical passport characteristics behave very differently in acceleration. Some people are very sensitive to the increase in the supply voltage, others - no, the third allows you to raise the frequency, only one step "weakening" timings, and so on ... Therefore, all the Ocz Blade rivals selected for today's comparison correspond to it as at speeds, so And on the cumulative volume. We meet:
