I was looking forward to the opportunity to get a closer look and, of course, to get acquainted with the new products live. And not one new model appeared, but two at once (for the first time in the entire history of the iPhone). Well, now the day has come when there are 2 boxes in front of me: a cardboard box with an iPhone 5S and a plastic one with an iPhone 5C. Well, let's start our acquaintance.
1. Packaging and set of iPhone 5S.
Almost indistinguishable from the box of a regular iPhone 5 (only in the image and inscriptions), white cardboard packaging, sealed with plastic wrap.
I warn you right away so that you are not surprised - iPhone 5S 32Gb ME308LL / A (Model A1533) from USA.
We open the box. The first thing that you can see is that it goes without saying that the device itself is in a standard plastic backing. The screen and the back are covered with a protective film.
Under the liner is a small envelope with a brochure, a flyer and Apple apple stickers. There is no so-called "clip" for ejecting the SIM-card tray, which is not surprising for an iPhone from America.
The rest of the kit is familiar to us from the iPhone 5, everything is unchanged: a power adapter with USB (in our case, a small square one), a Lightning-to-USB cable and, in a separate box, Apple EarPods with a remote control and a microphone
2. Packaging and set of iPhone 5C.
The box from the iPhone 5C is very similar to the packaging from the iPod Touch, only thicker. Opaque white plastic of the main body and a transparent top cover through which the iPhone itself is visible. The parts of the package are interconnected with a transparent narrow tape along the entire perimeter.
We peel off the tape, open the lid and in front of us is the iPhone 5C, fixed in a special transparent plastic backing and with a film glued to the display that simulates the iOS 7 work screen.
I forgot to mention that we have an iPhone 5C 16Gb ME502DN / A (Model A1507) from Germany. The set is almost the same as that of the 5S, only there are more pieces of paper, there is a "clip" for removing the SIM card tray and a European power adapter, i.e. absolutely compatible with our sockets.
Well, that's about the kits and that's it. It is a pity that the rumors were not confirmed (you could even see the unboxing video from China) that the kit contains a Micro USB to Lightning adapter. Alas, this did not happen.
3. Visual comparison of 5S and 5C
A little about something else. Outwardly, the iPhone 5S practically does not differ from the iPhone 5. The color has slightly changed, the Home button has become without a drawn square and the camera flash has become double. But we'll talk about this in detail in a separate review about the 5S.
Now we start comparing the 2 new devices with each other. The difference is least noticeable when viewed from the front.
First of all, in our case, the green frame around the perimeter of the screen and the drawn square on the Home button of 5C are striking. On the 5S, the bezel is less visible, and the button stands out more along the contour. The difference in dimensions in height and width is almost imperceptible: 123.8 mm x 58.6 mm for the 5S versus 124.4 mm x 59.2 mm for the 5C.
The rear view (as well as from all other sides) is more different, if not completely different. The 5C has solid plastic (and the whole body is a monolithic plastic "trough" :)), and the 5S has metal and glass

4. Tactile sensations / ergonomics smartphones.
Well, here, as you know, only personal impressions, and the size of hands / fingers is different for everyone, and everyone has their own way of using the gadget. The general conclusions are that both devices are practically equally convenient to use. All controls are easily accessible, and even for users with a small hand, it is very easy to operate the device. As for the weight, the models differ in this parameter: 5S - 112 g., 5C - 132 g. 5C feels a little different in the hand due to the plastic case and the smooth edges of the back. The 5S feels no different from a regular iPhone 5. Metal and glass are very pleasant to feel in the palm of your hand, a more pronounced edge on the back is familiar to those who have recently used Apple smartphones (4 / 4S / 5). But there is one personal thing of mine .... As in the case of the 5th iPhone, the new models seem a little slippery to me, I’m not sure that the device will not fall out of my hand. I repeat - this is purely my personal opinion. Many people use the devices very well and do not complain. But I still remain a supporter of covers / bumpers. Yes, and for a smartphone it is calmer, less likely to be damaged if dropped. I don't know what made Apple choose glossy smooth plastic for the iPhone 5C, it seems to me that the Soft-touch coating of the case would be more practical and ergonomic. Although the branded cases released along with smartphones will help protect, decorate and diversify the appearance of the devices, and will also help those (like me) who find the case of new products a little slippery.
5. Summary.
Both new items turned out to be quite aesthetic, comfortable and provide a wide choice for buyers - "for every taste and color." 2 models with different characteristics and body materials, 3 memory options each, 3 different 5S colors and 5 different 5C case colors. So the choice is yours.

Perhaps, to correct this failure, a budgetary iPhone: $ 300 non-contract device, plastic version Apple smartphones would pave the way for the company to the hearts of buyers from developing countries.
But think about it: in six generations iPhone in the product line Apple there have never been two current models at the same time - the lineup has always consisted of the current flagship and previously released obsolete devices. The logic behind these actions is simple: by providing iPhone 5 bright plastic case, the company will be able to eliminate the shortage of spare parts for assembling a new iPhone 5S, which, most likely, will not differ outwardly from what we see in today's iPhone 5 ... Thus, the plastic "shell" goes to the backward iPhone 5, and more expensive spare parts go to production iPhone 5S... This approach has one more advantage - Apple will not overly “inflate” the lineup of its smartphones, leaving only three models on the market: iPhone 4S updated iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S.
Singleton also reports that iPhone 5 with a reimagined exterior will be distributed for $ 99 with a two-year contract, which is generally in line with current policy Apple in USA.
The built-in camera is exactly the same as in the iPhone 5. The same lens, the same 1 / 3.2-inch sensor, the same resolution (8 megapixels) and exactly the same output image. Processor (A6, 2 cores, 1.3 GHz), graphics accelerator, RAM - all of this is directly borrowed from the iPhone 5. It makes no sense to talk about everything in detail.
It is worth noting, however, that the amount of RAM in the iPhone (both 5S and 5C) is small by today's standards. Android flagships from last year have 2GB of RAM each, however, on average, iPhones are faster, smoother and more responsive. But the lack of an opportunity to buy an iPhone 5C with 64 GB of storage is frankly disappointing. Probably, in this way Apple tried to exclude internal competition between 5C and 5S, but, in our opinion, there was no need for this. It would be much wiser to launch an iPhone 5S with 128GB of storage. And we still hope that it will eventually happen, as is the case with the large iPad.
IOS 7 features
Interestingly, Apple released the iOS 7 (7.0.1) update for the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C on launch day. The difference in iOS on 5C is, perhaps, only in one thing. When you turn on the smartphone for the first time, it will have a background of the same color as the body of the device. We have already mentioned this above.

This is my third phone from this company, however, I cannot attribute myself to Apple fans, I respect the choice of other people and other operating systems, each has its own pros and cons, which are known to everyone for a long time, everyone has already made this choice for themselves, therefore, the holivars that periodically flare up on specialized forums are not very clear to me. I have experience in operating smartphones on Windows Mobile, now deceased, Android and iOS. Again, each operating system has advantages and disadvantages, based on which everyone makes their choice. For me today, the optimal system is iOS.
Until 5C, I calmly used the Apple iPhone 5, and maybe I would have continued to use it, but after 10 months of active use, its body wiped out (the smartphone was black), it had a light weight, and the exposure of the body of the "five" was also upsetting "bending under a certain pressure on him. In general, in terms of durability, the iPhone 5 case did not suit me, for the same reason the iPhone 5s was swept aside, despite its technical innovations. Based on this, the choice fell on the iPhone 5C, despite the general dissatisfaction with this smartphone, looking ahead, I will say that I am completely satisfied with it.
Purchase
It has become a habit for me to buy all my phones abroad. The two previous phones were ordered from the German online store Computeruniverse.ru and delivered safely and promptly. Therefore, out of old habit, I went to a familiar site in search of a new phone, but I was very upset about the price of this device in Europe. It was decided to look for another way to buy this phone. Ahead of the questions of residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg, I want to say that in my city in Siberia, online stores selling "gray" devices practically do not exist, and existing ones sell devices at a price not much lower than prices for PCT devices. After going through several options, I opted for the American online store Amazon.com with delivery to the Russian Federation through the Qwintry intermediary. I do not pretend to be a professional journalist and reviewer, so here are only my personal impressions of this phone. Also, there are already many reviews on this phone, so I will try to present the information that may be useful to a person who may be considering this phone as a purchase. Let's start.
We start as usual with the packaging. As far as I remember, this is the first Apple phone that does not come in traditional cardboard packaging, but in plastic. The box is similar to those that ship the Apple iPod Touch. In my opinion, this has nothing to do with the budget of the phone, it is possible that the calculation is made for the main circle of buyers, that is, for young people. The box is plastic, compact. It fulfills its main task - keeping the phone on its way to the buyer. However, I have one complaint about this box. It would seem that there can be claims to the box. And it's all about the sticker that goes along the perimeter of the box. After tearing it off during the first unpacking, it will no longer be possible to close the box tightly and the top cover will constantly fall off.
The package is standard - the phone itself, EarPods, Lightning cable, charger. Everything is standard. There are no staples in the kit. this phone is from the USA, there they are not equipped with staples. Why so is a mystery to me personally. If anyone knows, please share in the comments. I knew that the charger would have a non-native plug, so I bought an adapter in advance.

Despite the aforementioned minus, the box looks stylish and unusual, emphasizing the youthfulness of this device.
Now let's move on to the phone itself. Despite the fact that the iPhone 5C is made of plastic, this plastic is far from what Samsung, for example, uses in their devices. The plastic is very smooth, pleasant to the touch and also durable. During the operation (3 weeks), no scratches appeared, and I am not particularly careful with the phone. This type of case is definitely more practical than the aluminum used in the iPhone 5, and the 5C has also become heavier in relation to the "five" - now it is pleasantly felt in the hand, heavier. And finally, the last problem was solved, this case is much more resistant to bending. Let's take a closer look at this smartphone.
In front of the phone, the main area is occupied by a 4-inch screen covered with protective glass and similar in characteristics to the screens of the iPhone 5 and. However, in some reviews you can read the information that the 5C screen is brighter than the one in, I have no opportunity to check this information, so we will trust this information. Below is the home button familiar to everyone, there are no complaints about its operation, it is pressed softly without clicks and does not play. Above the screen is an earpiece, as well as a front camera, inherited by the 5C from its older brother. This is the second difference between the 5C and the iPhone 5. At the bottom, from left to right, we can see the 3.5 headphone jack, microphone, sync and charge jack, and speaker.
At the back at the top, we see the lens of an 8-megapixel i-Sight camera, a second microphone, and an LED flash. At the bottom there is technical information and the inscription "iPhone", written in a slightly different font.

Comparing the new iPhone 5C with the iPhone 5, I can't help but note the improved volume buttons. They are now similar to those in the iPad Mini. Oblong in shape, for me personally, they are much more convenient to use.
In general, there are no complaints about the controls and the build quality, except for a slight backlash in the "sound-silent" mode switch lever. As for the claims to the plastic case, I have to disagree with them, in my opinion the plastic case is more resistant to both physical and thermal impact. As a result, I am personally completely satisfied with the body.
Operating system, battery life
This smartphone runs on the well-known iOS operating system. At the moment, the current version is iOS 7.0.4. Literally today it became known that Apple released iOS 7.1 for developers, I did not install it, so everything below will apply to iOS 7.0.4. The update of this operating system to version 7 has become the most global since its release. Literally everything has changed - from functionality to design. As for the design, a lot of copies were also broken on forums and websites. I personally like the new design. The system has noticeably freshened up, looks stylish and colorful. The main innovations have already been described more than once, so I will not repeat myself.
As for battery life, the iPhone 5C has a slightly more capacious battery than the iPhone 5, in practice this translates into a slightly longer standby mode, I did not notice any difference in active use.

Sometimes I rent movies to watch, and also buy music, since the prices in the Russian iTunes Store are more than pleasant, the purchased songs can be downloaded at any time to any iOS device running under your account, it is also possible to enable automatic downloading of music and applications in the settings to another device, it's very convenient. I also do not consider it shameful to pay a certain amount of money for a good and high-quality application. The developer should be rewarded for his work. Previously, using Android devices, I also made an app purchase on Google Play.3G / 3Gs. Hopefully, there will be no problems with a cracking plastic case, like those phones, at least the instability to scratches has been corrected by Apple engineers.
The 5C does not create the feeling of a budget phone, as almost all authoritative publications called it. Perhaps this is due to rumors circulating on the Web before the September announcement of the company from Cupertino. In my opinion, Cook's team was not going to present a budget phone, they wanted to create a bright, stylish phone for young people, you must agree, you cannot judge the budget of the phone, using only the plastic case as the main argument, while omitting its obvious advantages - strength and durability. After all, in other respects we have a very good device in terms of its characteristics, which, according to its performance characteristics, cannot be called budget. Also, an additional plus can be called support for LTE networks. I mention this feature only in my conclusions for the reason that LTE will not appear soon in my city.
Regarding recommendations to other users, turn this device in your hands in the store, if you are satisfied with iOS and the 5C case, feel free to take it, the more the prices for this device are more than adequate, even for PCT devices.
