Which antivirus is better. McAfee inside, or Why Intel needs this purchase? Video about which antivirus is better

I apologize to everyone who is not interested in the news of the IT industry - but judging by the "requests of radio listeners" many of them are still concerned about this topic. So why did Intel buy the McAfee - and what will come of it?

But first of all, there is a statement: everything that I publish here in LJ, below and above, is my personal point of view and does not necessarily coincide, contradict or refute the official opinion of my company. A sort of "split personality". Sometimes I speak on behalf of the company (not here) - and sometimes on behalf of myself (for example, here). This is so that the reading public has no misunderstandings :)

So, Intel-McAfee. Why.
This question is divided into two sub-questions. 1. Why security. 2. Why exactly McAfee.

Why Intel is interested in strengthening its security business - it seems obvious to me. The IT-security industry is now the "hot spot of the IT-planet". The further - the more problems with malware, hardware and operating systems - similarly, the IT-security market is growing - and is very, very attractive. The further - the more. It is for this reason that many Big Players turn their attention in one way or another to the security market (remember, for example, Microsoft). Well, the Big Board of Directors has probably gathered and decided: we urgently need to deal with security products. And he passed his decision down to Top Management, or the Strategic Innovation Council, or the M&A department, or wherever else - I'm at corporate structure Intel is not strong.

Why exactly McAfee. DO NOT KNOW. I don't see any logic. Probably, having received instructions "from above", the authorized division conducted a study of the security market and decided that the most convenient (by some criteria) purchase would be exactly McAfee. Other options are either too small for Intel, or, for example, are not for sale (I do not exclude that Cisco or Juniper are not at all interested in selling their security divisions). I do not exclude that the decision was made exactly in this way: "You need to buy something under security in order to integrate it into Intel's product line!" - "we looked here and found nothing worth buying, except for McAfee."

I do not exclude that the process described above was iterative and took more than one year.
True, I do not exclude the fact that the purchase history was simpler, more banal and faster :)

But this is not the most interesting thing. The most interesting thing ahead is what will come of all this as a result. It seems to me that the most likely scenario is optimistic and pessimistic.

The optimistic part. It is obvious that Intel will definitely use McAfee's experience and technologies to strengthen current and develop new "iron" security solutions. It is possible that as a result completely new, innovative "pieces of iron" will be presented. I do not exclude that they are really useful and successful. This concludes the optimistic part.

A bit of pessimism. Namely - what will become of the current software solutions from McAfee. Oh, I'm afraid it's nothing good ... Intel is a large, successful company-leader in the "iron" IT market. Software from Intel is far from being so successful (google, for example, "Intel Software Products" ...) Well, purely software projects do not live inside Intel! And it is strange to expect that the giant hardware company will revise its "life principles and traditions" in order to create familiar conditions for not the largest business in their "basket".

Besides, this is not Intel's first [unsuccessful] anti-virus project ... If anyone remembers, in the 90s of the last century there was such a "LanDesk Virus Protect". This product (if sclerosis does not change me) had a long history (I first saw it in 1992), used an engine like from Trend-Micro and was sold both in boxes for home users and to corporative clients... However, in 1998 Intel sold this project to Simantek. ... Then I waited 12 years - and bought the antivirus again. But a little more expensive :)

So, it seems to me very strongly that we are witnessing the final act in the history of the antivirus patriarch. Antivirus from John McAfee is the very first antivirus project that can be considered the founder of the antivirus industry (well, or one of the very first).

1987 - John McAfee hired a programmer who wrote the very first commercial antivirus for him. In the future, this project showed absolutely insane growth - and in the mid-late 199s it became the undisputed leader of the industry (but later lost to Simantek).

1992 - "Michelangelo" virus epidemic, John McAfee's company used the epidemic for PR-hysteria ("ahh! All computers will be destroyed"). Ay-yay-yay ... Sales have skyrocketed, and a small speck remains on the company's reputation ...

1997 - merger with Network General, as a result of which McAfee Associates is renamed Network Assotiates Inc. (NAI) Later the McAfee brand was revived.

1998 - McAfee acquires its longtime rival, Dr. Solomon Group.

NOD 32 of course!

Eugene Kaspersky, CEO of Kaspersky Lab, sarcastically described the anti-virus rival McAfee as a losing focus. McAfee is currently owned by Intel.

In addition, Kaspersky said Intel had failed to make headway with a much-publicized plan to radically address security issues by tightly integrating security software with its chips.

“They promised to destroy the market information security using the new hardware platform, ”said Kaspersky during a lunch with reporters in Boston. - I do not believe in that. Too much like a Hollywood story. "

“They recently announced a new product, working with hardware specialists to create a hardware-based solution,” Kaspersky chuckled, referring to the McAfee Anti-Theft program for Ultrabooks with Intel chips, introduced in September.

He called the $ 7.6 billion price Intel paid for McAfee absurd - "Anti-theft for $ 7 billion!"

According to Kaspersky, CEO Paul Otellini and Intel's board did not understand what they were doing when the company announced its acquisition of McAfee on August 19, 2010. "When Intel's CEO said, 'Go and buy McAfee,' he didn’t think about the board.”

Kaspersky acknowledged that Intel could have brought some fresh "ideas" into hardware-based solutions by offering embedded systems to complement anti-virus programs.

A McAfee spokesman contacted by CRN declined to comment.

According to Kaspersky, McAfee is not a particularly "determined" organization lacking in fighting spirit. He is convinced that after the acquisition, McAfee suffers from "inertia." “The magic fire inside McAfee has died out,” he said.

“Information security, especially endpoints, is like a football team,” said Kaspersky. - You must focus on one goal. If your team is just a small part of a much larger organization, then its bosses are not interested in what is happening within your team. They have different business interests. Therefore, I never believed in anti-virus Microsoft program... Likewise, I don’t believe in Intel antivirus. ”

The criticism of McAfee coincided with the appointment of a new executive vice president of sales, Steve Redman. He will replace executive vice president of global sales Joe Sexton, a veteran McAfee who "left to take the lead in a tech company that does not compete with us," a McAfee spokesman said.

Gavin Struthers, McAfee's senior vice president of global channels, told CRN in October that the joint efforts of Intel and McAfee have helped revitalize security innovation.

But Kaspersky believes that Intel's possible huge investment in McAfee does not lead to a competitive advantage. “It doesn't matter how big the investment is given Intel’s large financial resources,” he said. - The result is not determined by the budget. The champion is the one who plays the best. "
