Creating an archive with a password

To test the operation of the program, several archives were encrypted using WinRAR with different passwords for use various types attacks.

To create a password for an archive, you need to select the folder or file that you want to archive with the right mouse button in the main menu of the WinRAR program (another archiver can be used) context menu select Add files to archive (Fig. 2)

Recovering the archive password

Now let's proceed to recovering the password for archive No. 1.

Let's open the program Elcomsoft Advanced Archive Password Recovery.

In the dropdown list Attack type choose Bust. When selecting this type of attack, all possible combinations of symbols allowed by the user on the tab will be searched Kit fields Character set(Fig.5). This type of attack is the slowest, but is often most successful against short and simple passwords.

If you know what characters the password consists of, you must in the field Character set Select or clear the necessary checkboxes to reduce password recovery time.

When all the program settings for password recovery are made, you need to click on the button on the toolbar Open and specify the path to the encrypted archive. Once decryption is complete, a window with the recovered password will open (Fig. 6)

As we see in Fig. 6, the password was recovered in 9 seconds. This time can be reduced if information is known not only about the characters used, but also about the length of the password. This setting can be done on the tab Length(Fig.7).

When specified additional information about the password (password length), the recovery time was 5 seconds (Fig. 8).

If some part of the password is known, the program provides the ability to use Mask attack. A mask attack is a modified brute-force attack and is used if certain information about the password is known, namely if some of the characters in the password are known. You can specify a specific character/characters that are used in the password at a specific position.

In order to use this type attacks, required in the drop-down list Attack type choose By mask and indicate on the tab Kit known password characters in the Mask field (Fig. 9). For example, the password consists of 4 characters, starts with “a” and ends with “f”. In this case, you can specify the mask “a??f”, in which the question mark characters replace the searched ones. With this setting, guessing unknown password characters will take the same amount of time as searching for a two-character password.

If the password contains “ ? ”, then on the tab Advanced you can change the character that will be used when specifying the mask as an unknown character.

Users often use whole words as passwords to make them easier to remember, rather than a random set of characters. To recover such a password, the following type of attack is suitable: According to the dictionary. This method allows you to brute force passwords included in dictionaries. Compared to trying all possible combinations of characters, trying dictionary words takes much less time, but there is a high probability that the password is not in the dictionary.

When setting up this attack (Fig. 10) on the tab Dictionary You can specify the path to the dictionary that will be used to recover the password.

Unfortunately, only one dictionary can be used at a time. Elcomsoft Advanced Archive Password Recovery already has three built-in dictionaries (Fig. 11): English (242965 words), German (80472 words) and Russian (75459 words). Additional dictionaries can be used.

How to add a file to an archive

To do this you need to follow a few simple steps.

You select the file or folder you need, right-click on it, and in the context menu that appears, select “Add to archive...”

A window will open in front of you in which you must first select the RAR or ZIP archive format (both formats can be sent by email).

And one more item - “Archiving options”.

If suddenly your friend does not have this program, then you can make a self-extracting archive. That is, you need to check the box next to Create SFX archive. And then anyone can unpack this archive. It differs in the exe extension and the download in the form of a yellow box.

After all the set values, click OK and you will receive a packed archive. Then you can safely send the archive by email or save it on your computer.

How to unpack the archive

Let's say you received archived photographs from your relatives by email. To extract them, you need to do the following:

Hover your mouse cursor over the “stack of books” archive icon, double-click on it with the left mouse button (as if you were opening a simple folder), a window with the winrar program will open in front of you, and inside you will see the archived files.

To extract them, you need to click on the “extract” button, in the window that opens, indicate the location on your computer where you are going to store the extracted files. By default (if you do not select a path), the files will be extracted to the folder where the archive itself is located.

Then click OK. Files are being retrieved.

How to set a password for an archive

I would like to immediately draw your attention to the fact that it is possible to put a password on an archive in the winrar program only during the process of packaging it and after you have added a file or folder to the archive. That is, if you want to put a password on an already created archive, you need to first extract all the files from the archive and then repack it.

You can also use a simpler method: attach a previously created archive file to the new one and put the password on the new archive.

To set a password for the winrar archive, do the following:

  1. Select the folder with files for which you want to put a password.
  2. Place the mouse cursor over the selected folder, right-click, and select “Add to archive” from the drop-down menu.
  3. A window should open on the “General” tab. This is the very first tab. Next, open the “Advanced” tab and click on the “Set password…” button.

A window will open with a password entry field. We come up with a password, enter it in this field, then enter the password again to confirm.

In the "Folder Options" window, in the "View" tab, uncheck the box next to "Show hidden files, folders and drives”, and then click on the “OK” button.

Now in the place where the hidden folder was previously, you will see it again. This folder will have a semi-transparent appearance.

To make the folder open again, right-click on the folder and select “Properties” in the context menu.

In the “Properties” window, in the “General” tab, in the “Attributes” item, uncheck the checkbox next to the “Hidden” item. The folder is open for public access again.

When using an archiver, a folder or file will turn into an archive and it will not be possible to open it without knowing the password. In this example, I use the WinRAR archiver.

There is a folder on the Desktop where you need to put a password. I called this folder “Secret Folder”. Right-click on the folder.

In the context menu, select “Add to archive...”.

In this window, click on the “Set password...” button.

The “Enter Password” window opens.

Enter your password in the appropriate field, and then confirm your password for verification. In this example, I used a simple password. If you are very important information, then the password should be complex.

There are special programs for selecting and decrypting passwords. TO simple password, it will be easy for such a program to guess the password. To create a strong password, it is better to use special program- password manager. With this program you can create strong password, the program will remember it, and when needed, you can use it to enter your password again.

If you come up with a password yourself, then use a password that you will not forget (Russian words can be entered into English layout keyboard). Remember the password, because if you forget it, you will not be able to unzip the archive and open the file.

After that, check the box next to “Encrypt file names”, and then click on the “OK” button.

Archiving begins, and after it is completed, an encrypted archive will be created. The archive has the same name as the original folder. After this, you can delete or move the original folder somewhere.

In order to open the created encrypted archive, right-click on the archive, and in the context menu click on the “Open” item.

Enter the password in the appropriate field, and then click on the “OK” button.

The WinRAR archiver window appears, in this window click on the “Extract...” button.

In the “Extract Path and Options” window, click on the “OK” button.

After this, the encrypted archive will be unpacked onto the Desktop, and the folder on which the password was previously set will again appear on it.
