IPhone 6 6s are the same size

They went on sale in Russia on October 9, 2015, arousing great interest among Russian fans of Apple technology. However, many interested people were wary of the new product, as is usually the case with Apple smartphones with the "s" prefix. Especially for those who doubt the significance of the differences between iPhone 6s and iPhone 6, we have prepared an article in which we described in detail all the differences between smartphones.

Display

The main difference between the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6 was the presence of a display with support for technology that tracks the pressure on the display. This function makes it much easier to work with the device, since the main features of applications, both standard and third-party, can now be accessed with one strong press. 3D Touch also works inside applications, allowing iPhone 6s owners with new gestures to preview web pages, photos, save data, share information, etc.
Support for 3D Touch in the first month after the release of the iPhone 6s has acquired thousands of different applications and games from the App Store and this is just the beginning. Developers are coming up with more and more original applications, making the experience of working with a smartphone and the applications installed on it completely different.

In other respects, the displays of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are the same as those of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

CPU

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are powered by Apple's all-new 1.8GHz dual-core A9 processor. The M9 coprocessor in the new product turned out to be built into the main chip, which makes it easier to interact with the sensors, as well as give the smartphone owner the opportunity to activate Siri with the "Hey Siri" command without having to have an active connection to the charger.

The iPhone 6 is based on the Apple A8 processor, supported by the M8 coprocessor. The main chip of last year's "six" is also dual-core, however, the processor frequency is "only" 1.4 GHz.

The difference between the and the Apple A8 is most clearly demonstrated by tests. In the new chip, Apple engineers managed to achieve a performance increase of up to 70% compared to the A8, and the power consumption of the new item was reduced by 35%. It is because of this that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus were able to work even faster, while maintaining an impressive battery life. As for the graphical gain, the Apple A9 is as much as 90% compared to the A8.

RAM

The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have 2GB of RAM, while the previous generation iPhone only boasted 1GB of RAM. What are the benefits of this?

Everything is simple here - new Apple smartphones, due to 2 GB of RAM, become incredibly fast. You can feel it everywhere: when launching applications, when working with video, when surfing the Web, when switching between running tools, etc.

This, however, does not mean that the iPhone 6 will work slower overnight, just when comparing smartphones of different generations, the difference will be noticeable to the naked eye.

Cameras

For those who like to take pictures and shoot videos, the main improvement in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus is the cameras. New Apple products received 12-megapixel iSight cameras using advanced pixel adjustment technology. Allows the enlarged sensor to take incredible pictures with a maximum resolution of 4032 × 3024 pixels. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are equipped with 8-megapixel cameras and the maximum image resolution is 3264 × 2448 pixels.

The cameras of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus also differ from their predecessors: improved tone mapping system and advanced noise reduction, support for Focus Pixels technology and the possibility of panoramic shooting with a resolution of up to 63 megapixels.

However, the differences between the optics of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 do not end there. New Apple smartphones can shoot videos in 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) at 30 fps. The original "sixes" did not have such an opportunity. It will also be important to note that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6s Plus has optical image stabilization when shooting video, while last year's Apple phablet boasted only optical image stabilization when shooting photos.

The FaceTime camera in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus was 5-megapixel, significantly more than the 1.2-megapixel resolution found on the front cameras of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. In addition, the new products also have a "trick" - a Retina Flash, which allows you to illuminate the screen when taking selfies.

Another distinctive feature of the new Apple smartphones and their cameras is the unique ability to record “live photos”. Live Photos captures 1.5-second video clips before and after the shutter is clicked to create a "come to life" effect.

Touch ID

The fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus has received a noticeable improvement. The second generation Touch ID scanner allows authorization on the device almost instantly.

The increased speed of the Touch ID sensor is especially noticeable in comparison. In the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the unlocking time could be more than a second, and the sensor could not always correctly identify the owner's finger.

Connection

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus support 4G LTE Advanced, which can reach speeds of up to 300 Mbps. For comparison, in the original sixes, the maximum modem bandwidth was limited to 150 Mbps.

Working with Wi-Fi networks on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus has also become faster - the maximum speed when working with wireless networks from flagships can be 866 Mbps. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus had a peak physical bandwidth of 433 Mbps.

The new iPhones can work more efficiently in roaming, due to the support of 23 LTE bands.

Battery

Notably, the iPhone 6s has a 1,715mAh battery, while the iPhone 6 has an 1,810mAh battery. Despite this, the battery life of both smartphones is identical: up to 14 hours of talk time, up to 10 days in standby mode and up to 50 hours in audio listening mode.

Frame

One of the most talked about problems of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, related to the unbendable cases, in the new Apple smartphones has been resolved. The 7000 series aluminum used as the base material for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus cases is more durable and 60% harder than the alloy used in the previous generation iPhone.

Due to all the internal changes that took place in the iPhone 6s, the dimensions of the smartphone have increased slightly compared to the iPhone 6: 138.1 mm x 67.0 mm x 7.1 mm versus 138.1 x 67 x 6.9 mm. However, the thickness increased by 0.2 mm, as the owners of the iPhone 6s themselves say, who switched to the new product from the original "six", is only a plus for the smartphone.

And of course, one cannot fail to note the new color of the case - "rose gold". Launched in 2014, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus didn't have one.

Pricing (updated November 13, 2017)

As of November 13, 2017, the price tags for conventional and modified "sixes" in Russia are as follows:

And the first rumors about the next generation of the Apple smartphone have already begun to appear. Nevertheless, for many fans of Apple products, the question is still open - is it worth buying the 2015 model or choosing the iPhone 7?

The main reason for the second option is that there is no significant difference between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s. Nevertheless, the differences are present and they are much more significant than it seems at first glance. It is about them that we will talk about in this article.

Frame

Visually distinguish iPhone 6 from iPhone 6s pretty hard, the only significant innovation is the appearance of the case in "rose gold" color. It's also worth noting that since September 2015, Apple has stopped selling the iPhone 6 in gold.

However, this does not mean that Apple engineers simply clothed slightly newer chips and chips in an old case. The current flagship is assembled an order of magnitude better, better protected from dust and moisture, and the more durable aluminum of the 7000 series was chosen as the main material. put on weight(143 grams versus 129 for its predecessor), in thickness (7.1 mm versus 6.9 mm) and length (138.3 mm versus 138.1).

Screen and cameras

The display module has not undergone significant changes - it is still a 4.7-inch Retina display with a resolution of 750 x 1334 pixels (image density - 326 ppi).

But both cameras (main front) have been updated quite significantly. The first received a matrix of the same size as the iPhone 6, but with a higher resolution - 12 megapixels versus 8 megapixels. The updated camera allows you to shoot high-quality photos in low light conditions and FullHD video at 120 frames per second. The only noticeable drawback is the rather outdated f2.2 aperture.

The front camera, to the delight of selfie lovers, also received a higher resolution matrix - 5 megapixels. However, during video calls, the interlocutor will still see your face in HD 720p quality.

It is impossible not to mention the function "Live photos" (live photos), when activated, the device records short videos before and after taking a picture.

3D Touch

Perhaps the main hardware innovation in the iPhone 6s. Apple compares this technology in importance to multitouch, which is generally true. From now on, the user interface will work not in one, but in two planes at once, in the truest sense of the word. If earlier all gestures on the screen were carried out exclusively on a horizontal surface, now you can press down harder and get access to various functions.

At the same time, the special Taptic Engine will provide tactile feedback through vibration. 3D Touch APIs are open to third-party developers and are massively implemented in various games and applications.

Performance

The heart of the iPhone 6s is the 64-bit Apple A9 processor backed by the M9 coprocessor. What is the difference between the latter and its predecessor is unknown, but the CPU, according to Apple's assurances and the results of synthetic tests, has become 70% more efficient. As for the graphics, there is an acceleration of work by 90%.

Periphery

The iPhone 6s battery became a disappointment for many users - its capacity not only did not grow, but also dropped from 1810 to 1715 mAh. Software and hardware optimization allowed to keep the battery life at the same level, however, there are no positive shifts in this direction.

Few people had serious complaints about the work of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 6, but work on it was also carried out - in the iPhone 6s, fingerprints are scanned even faster and better.

Hey Siri without charging connection

On iPhone 6, you can activate the Personal Assistant using the Hey Siri command only when the smartphone is connected to a power source. Thanks to the efforts of the developers from Cupertino, Siri in iPhone 6s responds to user requests even while in a locked state.

Smartphones that have captured the hearts of Apple fans with their size. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S - these are the phones we will talk about and talk about how they differ.

The difference on the price tag is very serious and therefore many cannot make a choice. For such people today there will be a detailed comparison of iPhones 6 and 6S.

We will also talk about the difference between these devices and what is better to choose for a purchase for the near future. There will be a lot of information, so let's get started.

Comparison between iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S

For many people, there is not much difference between these models, although it is very significant. It's not always worth judging a smartphone by its looks.

As always, Apple made the next model twice as powerful and the characteristics are very different. As always, this is best shown in a table:

This is how the difference between the iPhone 6 and 6S looks in numbers, but now let's talk about how it all feels in real life. After all, numbers don't always tell a lot.

The difference between iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S

Luckily, I had a chance to use both devices a little and feel the difference between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S. Let’s tell you everything in order.

Appearance. Smartphones outwardly do not differ at all, everything is just identical. The same rounded edges and stripes of antennas that many do not like so much.

You can only distinguish it by the color or the letter "S", which is located at the back. The 6S line has added a rose gold color that many have accepted quite well.

The speed of work and the filling. As usual, Apple did not bother too much and simply improved all the characteristics by 2 times.

The processor has become more powerful, the RAM has increased from 1 GB to 2 GB. This allowed for improved multitasking and faster smartphone performance. Everything starts up much faster.

Camera and battery. In terms of the camera, everything has changed so much that you could change your previous model just for her sake. After all, the front has increased from 1.2 MP right up to 5 MP, making selfies much more pleasant.

The back has improved, but not globally. If you look at the photos by dropping them on a PC, then the difference is felt. Naturally, the pictures will be a little better, because the lens and other details usually change.

If you look at the battery, then you shouldn't really believe the numbers in the table. They are correct, but the point is that the runtime depends more on the power consumption. 6S received a less voracious filling, which made it possible to reduce the volume.

The rest of the chips. We have improved the version of Touch ID and now it instantly unlocks the phone. In practice, if you take two devices and compare, you will feel the difference. Separately, there is no discomfort in this regard at all.

IPhone 6S introduces 3D Touch, which allows you to measure pressure. Now click on the icon and get additional functions. Some use it, some don't. Perhaps the technology will be revealed in the next generations.

What is better iPhone 6 or iPhone 6S?

To be honest, I think from all of the above, you probably realized that the difference between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S is more than significant, despite the outward identity.

If you are still walking with an iPhone 6, then changing it to the next generation is worth only for two reasons:

  • camera;
  • performance.

Everything else is rather arbitrary, because it is clear that the next generation always gets better. Although you can already think about the iPhone 7.

After all, there are much more chips in it, and the difference in price between the iPhones 7 and 6S is not so global. I know that all Apple technology is expensive, but if I had an iPhone 6 in my hands, I would do just that.

conclusions

This is how the reviewer of two flagships from Apple turned out. So you know exactly how the iPhone 6 differs from the iPhone 6S, as you can see there is a difference and it is significant.

To be honest, the 2016 iPhone 6 isn't all that bad. I think the next year, or even two, it can be used and not soared.

We often hear: allegedly, from year to year in the iPhone, practically nothing changes. This is especially often said about "intermediate" generations with the designation S, but are such judgments true? Of course not: and in order to prove this thesis, we decided to compare in detail two "Apple" smartphones. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S. What has changed over the year? What's the same?

Let's figure it out, using the scheme for comparing two gadgets that is already familiar to our resource: let's approach the question in the same way as we would do it, comparing an "apple" smartphone with any competitor. Let's go through all the main points!

Dimensions and design

This is one of the simplest questions: practically nothing has changed. At least outwardly. The iPhone 6S is tenths of a millimeter thicker than its predecessor, but it is completely impossible to notice this either with the eye or tactilely. Here's how the devices look next to each other:

But the body has become much stronger than that of the iPhone 6: this is achieved both by some reinforcement of the structure (which has a slight effect on the weight - 143 grams all 129 grams), and by the use of a special 7000 series aluminum. Thus, we can say: the iPhone 6S is much stronger, but slightly thicker and heavier. This can be more clearly estimated using the table:

Or using infographics:

As for the appearance, there is only one change: the appearance of the color scheme "rose gold". It is said to have been particularly in demand in Asian markets. In the colors "space gray", gold and silver, it is almost impossible to distinguish one smartphone from another. This can be clearly seen from the video:

However, if you look very closely, you will notice a minimal change in the shade of the rim:

Even the packaging of gadgets is traditionally similar:

Is the iPhone 6S stronger with the new case? Let's take a look at the drop test:

And on the bend test (which the "six", as you know, could not stand):

Hardware provision and performance

Here are some of the most serious differences. To begin with, we note that the iPhone 6 has one gigabyte of RAM, while the iPhone 6S already has two. Moreover, this is a memory of a more advanced LPDDR4 format (instead of the previous LPDDR3). What is the effect of this? See:

But the most important thing is in the processor. The iPhone 6 is powered by the A8, while the iPhone 6S is powered by the A9 chip, and the difference is huge. It is not very clearly expressed "on paper", but both benchmarks and numerous visual tests unambiguously confirmed the words of Apple itself. Here are some examples from some popular benchmarks.

  • AnTuTu, iPhone 6 results:

  • AnTuTu, iPhone 6S results:

  • Geekbench 3, iPhone 6 result:

  • Geekbench 3, iPhone 6S score:

Agree, the difference is obvious? Another benchmark in video format:

Apple claims the A9 is 70% more powerful than the previous processor. At the same time, its specific graphics subsystem is 90% more productive at once. Naturally, even the benchmark does not give such a significant gap, since the overall performance of the system is tested in a complex. However, at the time of this writing, no smartphone in the world can beat the iPhone 6S (and iPhone 6S Plus) in performance, in any synthetic benchmark. As for the iPhone 6, it is confidently holding at least in the top ten. And more often it ends up in the top five.

Display

According to the main indicators, the displays of the devices are the same. Their diagonal is 4.7 inches, the resolution is 1334 by 750 pixels (which gives 326 pixels per inch - corresponds to the Retina standard). Exactly the same technologies are used: IPS-matrices, LED backlighting. The screens of iPhone 6S and iPhone 6 are protected by heavy-duty lithium-ion glass.

The only significant difference between these screens is 3D Touch technology, but we'll talk about it below.

Built-in memory

The situation with the built-in memory has not changed. As before, options with a flash drive of 16, 64 and 128 gigabytes are available to buyers. Not expandable with memory cards.

Camera

And here the difference is very large: the iPhone 6S has taken a big step forward. But first, what can the iPhone 6's camera do?

The "six" has an 8-megapixel main camera, and a front one with a modest resolution of 1.2 megapixels. The main iSight can shoot video in Full HD format, and at a speed of up to 60 frames per second. The front camera is available in 720p format. By modern standards, this is a very decent camera with ample opportunities, absolutely adequate to the requirements of the market.

However, the iPhone 6S offers even more. First, the resolution has increased: up to 12 megapixels for the main camera, and up to 5 megapixels for the front camera. The updated iSight has the ability to shoot video in 4K format, up to 30 frames per second. It looks like this:

A special Live Photos mode has been added. And most importantly, the quality of shooting itself has increased. This advantage is rather difficult to express in some numbers, but all the tests carried out so far have clearly shown the advantage of the iPhone 6S. This does not mean that the "six" shoots poorly: however, the current generation takes even better photos. Here are some examples of visual comparisons:

As they say - judge for yourself! And here is what the front camera of the new model is capable of, including thanks to the on-screen flash function:

It's hard not to admit that it has become much better than the FaceTime that was built into the iPhone 6.

Operating system

Of course, nothing has changed here: both smartphones are supported by the ninth generation of iOS. At the time of this writing, the current version is iOS 9.2. For at least the next few years, both the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6 will run the same software.

Battery

The battery capacity in the iPhone 6S has dropped from 1810 mAh to 1715 mAh. This, however, did not affect the battery life declared by the manufacturer: Apple still promises 14 hours of talk time on the phone, 10 hours of work with LTE Internet, 11 hours of watching videos, 50 hours of listening to music.

It is these indicators in Cupertino that are considered optimal for a smartphone, and retain them by optimizing the power consumption of the device. What do real tests show? Here's what, for example:

But this is just one of the tests, and, as we can see, the results in it are very ambiguous. Two more comparisons, no longer "tabular", but illustrative:

There is, perhaps, no unequivocal answer “which is better”. Moreover, the experience of users in real work with the device can be very different.

Other possibilities

The iPhone 6S has two significant advantages in this category. We're talking about the Taptic Engine, which replaced the usual vibration motor, and the 3D Touch system. Both, in fact, came to the iPhone from the Apple Watch, where it was first successfully applied. Let's start with the first one.

The Taptic Engine is a replacement for the familiar vibration signal. Thanks to him, the gadget does not vibrate, but simulates a careful touch to the user's body. This is not just an unusual sensation: what is important is that the silent mode of a smartphone is for the first time truly completely silent. This can be clearly seen in the video below: it is not necessary to know the language for viewing.

And here is a video on how this cunning system works:

As for the 3D Touch technology, we have already talked about it in detail. It allows the iPhone 6S screen to not only respond to touch, but to distinguish between multiple levels of force. Thanks to this, Apple was able to provide users with completely new ways to control the device. Unfortunately, the iPhone 6 doesn't have all of this. Of the special features inherent in the new generation, only the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, the NFC module, and the same set of sensors: distance, illumination, barometer, gyroscope and accelerometer are available.

True, the iPhone 6S has a built-in Touch ID 2.0 fingerprint scanner, but it is not known for certain how it differs from the first version installed in the iPhone 6. According to Apple itself, the difference is in more accurate and reliable operation.

You can summarize the comparison of the characteristics of the two gadgets with this table, which summarizes all the information presented:

Let's draw conclusions

What are the results of the comparison? Of course, a lot has changed. iPhone 6S has a noticeably faster performance, much better camera capabilities - both main and front. The smartphone received interesting functionality in the form of a 3D Touch system, a tactile engine, and some other solutions. Finally, a more durable body, and the fourth color option.

At the same time, it is impossible not to recognize the iPhone 6 as an absolutely modern flagship smartphone today. The fact that the iPhone 6S made big strides forward didn't make the old model hopelessly outdated.

So, to repeat the question from the beginning of the article: does the iPhone really change nothing, especially in the S-models? As you can now clearly see, no. A lot is changing.

  1. The display is a rectangle with rounded corners. The diagonal of this rectangle, excluding rounds, is 5.85 inches (for iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone XS and iPhone X), 6.46 inches (for iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone XS Max), or 6.06 inches (for iPhone 11 and iPhone XR).
