IPhone Lock (Power On) Button Does Not Work - Anatomy of a Breakage. IPhone Lock (Power) Button Not Working - Anatomy of Breakage iPhone 5 Power Button

When using any device, the power button plays a decisive role. On the iphone 5s phone, this button is not only for turning it on, it also serves as a lock button.

The Power y iphone 5s button is located at the top of the smartphone, from the front of it, to the right. It is located on the end cable, like the volume and call mode selection buttons, the receiving microphone and the contact pad of the vibration motor.

Therefore, in the event of a breakdown, you can often observe other accompanying troubles during the operation of the iPhone:

Sticking, poorly pressed or the volume button does not function at all;
- spontaneous change of the indicator of the call mode on the display;
- Vibration mode failures when making calls or sms;
- microphone on iphone 5s does not record sound.

If you have at least one of the breakdowns, you need not only replacing the power button on the iphone 5s, but also full diagnostics of the phone. Perhaps the upper loop, which unites all these parts, has ceased to function in the device.

Reasons to repair the power button iphone 5s

  1. The lock button is not pressed, as if pressed into the phone. This means that the membrane has burst.
  2. The button is pressed, but not always effective, or poorly pressed. The reason is the same - in the membrane, but it is simply pushed through. But, you still need to replace the power button on the iphone 5s.
  3. The button does not function but is pressed normally. Most likely the reason is damage to the loop. Its replacement will also be required.
  4. The Power button, as it were, dangles, is not fixed in a certain position, and, accordingly, does not work when pressed. Also the problem of a bursting membrane.

Even if the iphone 5s lock still works, but you notice that it has become more difficult to press, you need to make an effort or it does not always work - it needs to be replaced. You shouldn't use any effort to turn on the phone, this will break the button even faster. Be aware that if such problems are observed, then soon it will still completely cease to function, so it is not worth delaying the repair.

Reasons for breakage of the lock button

The reasons, as for all iphone breakdowns, can be different.

As a rule, these are:

  • moisture penetration into the case;
  • mechanical damage;
  • falling of the device or strong impact;
  • pressing a button too hard with force.

Features of repairing the Power button on iphone 5s

The main feature and, at the same time, the complexity is the fact that in order to get to the breakdown itself, it is necessary to completely disassemble the iphone 5s device. This is an extremely difficult task, because you need to slowly, with care and care, one after another, disconnect all the system parts of the phone without damaging their functionality.

This happens in the following sequence:

  1. Unscrew the bolts securing the case at the bottom, at the end of the phone.
  2. Use a suction cup to lift the display, taking care not to damage the cable.
  3. Disconnect the display cable and battery. To do this, unscrew all the bolts.
  4. Disconnect the motherboard cables.
  5. Remove the motherboard.
  6. Remove the power button loop.
  7. Get the inoperative button, replace it with a new one. Replace the ribbon cable if necessary.

We start as usual in the iPhone 5 by removing the bezel.

  • Turn off your smartphone. If you have done this before, double-check it just in case, as working with the device turned on is hazardous to health.
  • Then unscrew the two screws on both sides of the Lightning port.
  • Press the suction cup against the display at the level of the HOME button, or rather, slightly above it.
  • Check if all the edges of the suction cup are in contact with the display. Without this, the tightness effect we need is impossible.

  • Make sure the suction cup fits snugly against the bezel.
  • With your iPhone in one hand, gently pull on the ring on the suction cup with the other hand to lift the bezel slightly and separate it from the main body.
  • If the socket does not lend itself, press a little, but not much. Remember that the frontal structure is quite thin, which means it is easily damaged by excessive force.
  • After inserting the opening tool into the space that appears between the bezel and the case, begin to gently push the case down while still lifting the bezel up with your other hand.
  • With the same tool, you should go along the entire seam, or rather, along the connector formed in its place. It is necessary to disengage the small plastic latches with the tool that hold the front panel on the case from the inside.

We strongly recommend that you take your time and do not run from one latch to another. Be consistent and accurate, move the tool from right to left without missing a single piece of the seam. This will free the front panel without damaging the latches and adjacent elements.

  • Never try to remove the panel immediately. The fact is that it is still connected to the body by several cables that go to the upper part of the iPhone "body".
  • The bottom of the case, on the contrary, has already been completely freed from the structure of the front panel, so you can slightly unfold it for convenience.
  • Try to make sure that the entire front panel is perpendicular to the body of the smartphone, but the cables would not be disconnected.

Remove the 3 screws securing the front bezel cable bracket to the machine's motherboard. You see, they have different sizes: two screws of 1.2 mm and one of 1.6 mm.

Remove the bezel bracket from the base board.

  • Using a plastic opening tool, disconnect the three cables coming from the front panel:
  • Front camera and sensor cable;
  • Digital converter loop;
  • Display loop.

Memo for the future:
If after you put the iPhone 5 back together, there is no image on the display or its quality leaves much to be desired, then you made a mistake when connecting these cables. Try restarting the device by removing the battery. If this does not help, reconnect the loops.

We remove the frontal structure and put it off for a while.

Unscrew the two screws securing the metal battery bracket to the main board. You need to unscrew 1 screw by 1.8 mm, and the other by 1.6. mm. When reassembling, carefully follow which one you screw in.

Remove the battery bracket.

  • Using a plastic opening tool, pry up and lift off the battery compartment cover.
  • Be careful not to touch the motherboard of the device, as this may damage its microcircuits.

  • Insert the tip of the plastic "opener" between the wall of the battery slot and the battery itself at the bottom of the case.
  • Run this tool around the perimeter of the battery to peel off the battery and remove it.
  • Just do not overdo it, otherwise you will inadvertently damage or puncture the battery.

  • If necessary, use a wide opening spatula. It will make it even easier to separate the battery from the adhesive layer.
  • Remove the battery.

Step 15. We start working with the main board of the device.

Using the spudger tip, remove the antenna loop bracket (the one that is responsible for receiving and transmitting the cellular operator's signal) from its socket on the motherboard, which is located immediately above the speaker.

Unscrew the two screws (1.5mm and 2.3mm) on the main board to separate it from the case.

  • Remove the cover from the top of the main board.
  • Make sure not to break the tiny cap ground plate next to the main camera.
  • On newer models, the bracket is usually attached to the camera, so it cannot be fully removed at this stage.

Using the flat end of the spudger, disconnect three stubs from the main board: the upper connecting ribbon, the push-button ribbon, and the lower connecting ribbon.

Unscrew the two 1.3 mm screws from the inner surface of the upper rear case.

Remove the 1.2mm screw from the center bracket of the main board.

Use your fingers to remove the bracket.

  • Use a spager to pick up the Lightning port ribbon cable and begin to gently pull it out of the socket on the main board.
  • In order not to damage the ribbon when removing it, first lift it up and pull it back (as you would with another page of a regular notebook) and only then remove it completely.

  • Insert the SIM eject tool into the special pinhole on the right side of the iPhone.
  • If such a tool is not available, unfold the outer thread of the paperclip and do the same.
  • When the SIM card tray pops out, remove both the card and it.

Unscrew a few more screws connecting the main board to the case: 2 screws of 2.3 mm and 3 screws of 2.7 mm, and it is better to remove the latter with the same flat screwdriver. Do not pay attention to the fact that its dimensions are 2 mm smaller, it will work fine anyway.

  • Face the main board to face the battery compartment of the chassis.
  • Do not try to completely remove the main board from the case at this stage, as one ribbon cable is still connected on the back side.
  • The flash is fixed in the body with a layer of glue, so it can only be removed with tweezers.

Using the spudger tip, we pry the Wi-Fi antenna cable from the slot under the motherboard of the device.

  • Remove the main board from the case.
  • When the motherboard is already outside, keep it on a grounding antistatic mat to prevent damage to the microcircuits.

Moving on to the power button. With the sharp end of a dielectric blade, remove the rubber gasket from under the Power button.

Unscrew one 1.9 mm screw that holds the power key bracket from the inner top side of the case.

  • Use a flat screwdriver to remove another 2.9 mm screw located on the bracket between the rear camera and its flash.
  • Unscrew the standard 1.6 mm screw as well.

Remove the metal bracket for the Power button.

Use a spager to pry the Power button bracket away from the upper edge of the case.

  • Push the power button from the outside with the sharp part of the spudger.
  • Pull out the key.

Unscrew the three screws securing the vibration motor and its bracket to the body: one screw is 2.3 mm, the second is 1.7 mm, the third is 1.6 mm, which holds the vibration motor in the body from the inside.

Take out the vibration motor together with the bracket.

  • Now we get down to unscrewing the screws that secure the volume button and mode switch.
  • In total, you need to unscrew two screws: 1.5 mm and 1.8 mm.

Hi. It's time to tell you my iPhone lock button breakage history... You will laugh, but I still have an old iPhone 4S brought in by an employee from Canada. My iPhone has served for 4 years and still works flawlessly.

True, there was one case when the POWER button simply stuck (stopped pressing) and I could not use the phone normally. Today I will tell you how to overcome this fairly common disease. This story is from the happy end series ... So read the article until the end.

I was not the first and will not be the last iPhone user to encounter iPhone buttons not working. In this case, there are cases of failure of both the lock (power) buttons and the volume buttons (plus or minus). It is also worth noting that the buttons break on absolutely all iPhone models.

  • How to replace the iPhone screen with your own hands -

What leads to their failure? It is difficult to give an unequivocal answer here ... It may be the iPhone falling on one of these buttons, or a strong press, or it may be just a marriage or poor-quality iPhone components.

Finding myself in a situation where one of the most strategic buttons on the iPhone stopped pressing, I decided to get to the bottom of the problem and fix the lock button on my own. Well, or at least try to fix it ... More on this in the next paragraph.

Why iPhone Lock Button Doesn't Work

Why does the lock button get stuck on some less fortunate devices? The answer lies in the bowels of the iPhone and relates to “ physiology of structure”Button mechanism.

The button itself (what we see on the end of the iPhone) cannot break as it is just a piece of aluminum. But under the button there is a so-called loop with miniature spring contacts, which fail.

Rice. POWER button and light sensor cable

The picture above shows a spring-loaded contact with a small black plastic “pimple” in the center. It is this very pimp that is the cause of all the troubles.

The fact is that over time (perhaps after a strong pressure or impact) this small black bump may crumble or fall off, and without it the button will no longer function.

Rice. Volume buttons loop with inoperative “+” button

Rice. Disassembled iPhone 4S with a broken lock button

That's the whole breakdown. Now the matter is only in the way of repair. It all depends on how much you are willing to fork out or perhaps want to make repairs yourself.

Workaround for not working power button on iPhone

There are many instructions on the Internet about “ How to fix iPhone lock button ...", but almost all of them deceive users and boil down to a temporary replacement of a button with an iOS software feature.

Apparently the Cupertinians initially knew that the problem with the buttons was quite possible, and added to Settings> General> Accessibility paragraph AssistiveTouch.

After activation, a square button appears on the iPhone screen, which has many functions.

One of the functions is called “ Screen lock"(Found in the subcategory" Apparatus“) And essentially performs the action of the iPhone lock button.

Actually, this is a temporary solution that many have successfully used. Naturally, the physical button will still be inoperative, and in order to really fix it, read the next paragraph.

IPhone Lock Button Repair

Let me remind you that the lock button stopped pressing after a small plastic bump crumbled (fell off, etc.) ... Well, you remember ( see photo above).

There are only two options to troubleshoot this problem:

  • replace the train entirely
  • repair the existing loop

You can replace the loop on which the lock button is located at the service center, or you can do it yourself. If you are straight-handed enough and have the necessary tools, you can try to save money.

IFixit.com has detailed instructions with photographs for disassembling almost all Apple equipment and not only. You can buy a flat cable for your iPhone model in China on AliExpress.com (or another website), but from personal experience I can say that the part MAY come originally non-working.

The fact is that on the same loop with buttons there are also other elements - sensors or switches.

Apparently, the Chinese are not very good with quality control yet ... So I bought a cable to replace the volume buttons on the employee's iPhone 4S (the “+” button did not work for him).

According to the instructions from the site iFixit.com made a replacement (it took about 1 hour in time), and as a result I got a working “+” button, but not working “-“ and a headphone jack.

Fortunately, I did not damage the original cable during disassembly. I had to install it back and resort to the option to repair the original loop.

Repair of the loop, or rather the spring contact of the button, consists in restoring the microscopic tubercle. What have I done? I took a sharp blade and cut a bump from the Chinese train, and then glued it with “superglue” in the right place on the original train.

You must be extremely careful and precise in your movements, because the parts are really VERY tiny.

I bought ten spring contacts on AliExpress () and now use them as donors to get plastic tubercles.

This is how I restored the power button and volume “+” button in two different iPhone 4S. ATTENTION: If you have never repaired anything in your life before, it is better to contact a specialist.

Well, and "a photo on a horse" ... The operation was successful, the patient was satisfied ...
