As already noted, both MacBook Pro 13 options "Retina are equipped with an Intel Core i5-3210M processor (2 kernels, 2.5 GHz). This is a dual-core mobile processor Ivy Bridge architecture, performed on the standards of 22 nm. The frequency of each nucleus is 2.5 GHz, and in TURBO BOOST mode - up to 3.1 GHz. Testing

The speed of the processor and RAM will help us to check the Geekbench 2 and Novabench benchmarks. Both are presented in Mac App. Store.

In the GeekBench measuring the performance of the CPU and RAM, the laptop scored 7440 points. But for regular work (in office applications, browser, GIMP, a package for HTML-layout Coda), the performance of a 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina is quite enough. At the very least, we have not become encountered with some kind of braces or other manifestations of productivity shortages. True, we did not launch, say, Final Cut or the like professional resource-intensive packages. But it is obvious that it is better to deal with a serious video formation on a 15-inch MacBook Pro with a discrete graphics accelerator.

Software

The laptop comes with a pre-installed OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion operating version.

In the article about the 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina, we noted that it is hardly the main disadvantage of this model - an insufficient number of applications optimized for a new screen. I must say that the problem has not yet been solved. In particular, such a key package as Microsoft Office. 2011 for Mac, still does not have optimization for Retina-display and looks terrible on MacBook. Not only are all icons in "Laneski". Even the text you dial in Word suffers from these "ladies". People with good vision guaranteed can not work in this package.

The most curious thing is that there is no such problem in OpenOffice. Of course, the interface is also not optimized for Retina, but the text is displayed perfectly correctly and smooth. Therefore, we used OpenOffice in the process of testing MacBook. Apple offers its own IWORK office package (including text editor Pages, Numbers tabular editor and Keynote presentation editor). Of course, IWork is fully optimized for the resolution of Retina, however, we note that it is compatible with Microsoft Office (especially in terms of complex formatting and multimedia presentations) far from ideal.

In general, the practice has shown that the overwhelming time we spend in pre-installed applications, in which it is easy to guess, everything is in order with the resolution. I used the MacBook Pro Retina for a month, working on it as a main computer, and, in principle, with the exception of the problem with Microsoft Office did not encounter some similar situations. The lack of permission in the CyberDuck FTP client and TRANSMISION torrent client, I could easily survive, the benefit of these programs did not have to watch constantly. With Image Tricks (on the illustration below), it was more complicated, but I used Gimp instead.

But the code of the site in the Coda 2 package pleased the eye.

Sitetes in the Safari browser looked excellently and even better than a 15-inch Retina, since the 13-inch screen screen and smaller resolution, so the artifacts on raster graphic objects are not so striking.

However, we have noticed a strange bug in Safari. Sometimes there were not very obvious on the open online page, but still noticeable vertical blue stripes. Of course, this impressions do not speculate, but not to note this fact would be wrong. Apparently, this is the consequence of the non-optimization of the HTML-layout to such a high resolution and density of dots per inch. It is clear that this is not Apple wine, the layout can be corrected, and sooner or later all sites will be optimized for Retina's laptop displays, but while the user must be ready for such nuances when working.

We note another specific feature of the MacBook Pro Retina: in viewing all the pictures look very finely. Because, let's say, if your image has a resolution of 1000 points on the wide side, then on the usual MacBook Pro it will occupy most of the screen, and on the MacBook Pro Retina - much less than half of the total area. However, it is quite possible to get used to this feature.

In general, the main question here is what you are doing on your laptop. If 90% of the working time, you spend in office packages and at the same time can come to terms with the replacement of Microsoft Office on Pages, Numbers and Keynote or on free OpenOffice, it is unlikely that you will come across any difficulties and inconvenience. But after all, the situation with third-party software for OS X is far that leaves much to be desired in terms of supporting Retina screens.

Autonomous work

Apple declares 7 hours of work in a web browser. We still failed to reach this indicator - perhaps due to the fact that the screen brightness we set about two thirds of the maximum (and not 50%, as Apple testers did). But, in our opinion, such brightness was most comfortable for work, 50% is still not so much. Therefore, it is worth navigating the hours for six work. On the one hand, this is not a lot. But on the other hand, if the laptop is capable of six hours of continuous operation, it means that you can safely take it in the morning without charger, write texts in transport, wander around the sites in a cafe, show a presentation or chart at the meeting, go home and sit down a little on the Internet before bedtime. As practice shows, in the process of active movement in the city, it is rarely happening that you are working for a long time continuously, therefore it turns out that six hours per day, full meetings and movements, you are enough with interest. It is just worth noting one nuance: in sleep mode (with a closed lid), MacBook also loses charge - even a bit (percent four per night), but still more than the iPad. This, however, close to the claimed data, according to which MacBook Pro Retina may be in sleep mode for one month.

Also, during the use of MacBook Pro, it was noted that the percentage of the remaining charge was displayed incorrectly: during the first hour, MacBook was discharged, judging by the indicator, only 3%, but for the next five hours lost the remaining 97%. Although, I must say thank you, did not turn off before the appearance of the number 0 on the charge indicator.

Apple has released a worthy continuation of the MacBook Pro Retina line, a long-awaited 13-inch model. In the younger configuration, it is cheaper than a 15-inch model for as many as $ 500. I used the MacBook Pro for a month (before that I worked on the usual MacBook Pro, and on the MacBook Air), and on the basis of my subjective experience, I decided that it was about such a laptop and dreamed. Alas, the picture of the future in the Apple view and the developers of external interfaces looks attractive, but here and now the idea spoils the almost inevitable use of various adapters, first of all - to connect flash drives, external HDD and other periphery with USB Type-A connectors. The battery life is another thing, in addition to a delicate situation with the connectors, which worries in the new "Macs". The luminous window in the form of an apple on the reverse side of the screen was also replaced by an opaque polished insert - apparently, from an amorphous metal, more resistant to scratches than a crystalline aluminum alloy of the case.

The on-screen panel is no longer covered with glass completely, as it was before. On the contrary, the plastic plate occupied the gap under the screen. Judging by the fact that the antenna unit is in the other half of the building, this solution is purely aesthetic.

As in the 13th and in the 15-inch version of the MacBook Pro on the sides of the keyboard there are perforated areas for sound output. However, as we will see further, only in two of the three modifications represented by Apple, they are used for their intended purpose, and not just for beauty.

MacBook Pro completely copies a 12-inch "poppy" keyboard with its wide and almost flat keys. They have a very short move and stable in the plane due to the new butterfly mechanism. Each key is highlighted by an individual LED.

Apple increased the touchpad by 50% in the 13-inch MacBook Pro and twice (!) - In 15-inch. But the main news is a touch-sensitive OLED panel, replacing the top row of keys. Thus, Apple joined Microsoft and its partners convinced that mobile computer There must be a sensitive screen. However, MacBook Pro developers were guided by other motives.

Function keys are used much less frequently, and in laptops their role is mostly reduced to the volume, screen brightness, etc., which is rather waste from the point of view of the limited keyboard area. On the contrary, the initial meaning of the function keys was to make their purpose depending on the active application. Such a principle is also working Touch Bar.

When the window of any application is not active, Touch Bar duplicates the top row of the keys of the previous "poppies". Otherwise, the palette of commands specific for a particular program opens (which can be collapsed to return to universal functions). The applications embedded in MacOS already have the support of Touch Bar, and for third-party developers there is an API. In Windows Touch Bar, also works after installing the driver, but only as a function key replacement.

Alas, no matter how good the idea of \u200b\u200bTouch Bar is, this is another feature of the MacBook Pro, which divided the public into two camps. And no reason, because only physical keys can be used to the touch. Dependence on the context of applications means that some trivial actions (for example, quickly turn off the sound) on Touch Bar are slower. But the absence of the Escape physical key, in our opinion, criticism overestimates: it is rare in MacOS.

To the right of the OLED panel is a mechanical switching key with an integrated biometric sensor. The latter is used to authorize online payments through Apple Pay and the entrance to OS (along with two other ways - password and Apple Watch).

It is curious that the rendering of images and registration of the input on Touch Bar serves a dedicated Apple T1 chip, which is nothing but a processor from SIP Apple S2 (see), and its software is a simplified version of Watchos, started from the RAM disk volume 25 MB. The integrated SECURE ENCLAVE coprocessor in T1 forms a protected interlayer between the OS and the three devices managed by them - Touch Bar, the touch ID scanner and a webcam. In addition, Apple Pay Dialogues for security purposes are entirely drawn on T1 and access to Keychain password repository also occurs through the chip.

The permission of the LCD panels in MacBook Pro has not grown (2560 × 1400 and 2880 × 1800 for screens 13.3 and 15.4 inches, respectively), but there are other changes: enlarged brightness (300 to 500 kD / m 2) and color space coating DCI-P3. The last point is time to talk in more detail than we have ever done earlier in the review, which acquired DCI-P3 support first among Apple products.

DCI-P3 is a standard that came from the film industry, it differs from the SRGB primarily by the shada range. From the base components of DCI-P3 sets the same coordinates of blue as in SRGB, but provides more rich green and monochromatic red. According to the coating area, DCI-P3 diffused by man is comparable to Adobe RGB, but is inferior to the latter in the green area and surpasses it in red.

However, DCI-P3 specifications are not reduced to color coverage and contain among many other parameters such as white point coordinates and gamma correction. Two documents accepted by SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) suggest various configurations for content studio processing (EG 432-1: 2010), on the one hand, and film projectors, on the other (RP 431-2: 2011). Therefore, speaking of support for DCI-P3 in a particular device, you need to specify what it is meant. The cinema version of the standard includes a 2.6 gamma correction and a white point with a pronounced green tint, while the studio-gamma is 2.4 and a white day of daylight, D65.

Apple chose the studio DCI-P3, which is best suited for consumer equipment, and gamma 2.4, by the way, was used in "Macs" before displays with DCI-P3 - unlike the 2.2 gamma characteristic of Windows. The display parameters do not interfere with MacOS correctly reproduce the images created in other color spaces, thanks to the ColorSync color correction system in MacOS (pictures without color profile, it considers as SRGB).

As for the MacBook Pro matrix itself, there is still little about it in addition to the fact that the substrate is made of ordinary amorphous silicon, and not Igzo, as in the iPad Pro. But, by rumors, by the end of 2017, mass delivery of suitable panels will begin and the next update will bring this technology in MacBook Pro, thereby increasing the energy efficiency and / or brightness of the screen. For the Apple highlight, it will certainly use blue LEDs covered with red and green luminophore, as it was already in IMAC with advanced color coverage.

To the MacBook Pro screen, we had only one claim - the computer supports color output with an accuracy of 10 bits per channel to external monitors, but the internal interface remained 8-bit.

By the location of the components in the Case 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar repeats a larger model, adjusted to other sizes and the number of battery sections. But it is easy to notice that if in a laptop with a screen of 15 inches on the sides of the keyboard, the dynamics of the built-in acoustics are really covered, then in 13-inch it is only a decorative element, and the sound comes from the ventilation slots in the bottom.

The 13-inch model with function keys, like its predecessor from the past generation (MacBook Pro with Retina Display 2015) costs one cooling fan, but, oddly enough, in some respects it is more successful than analogue with Touch Bar. It has a little increased battery, and from the bottom cover, the ventilation openings were removed and the speakers operate through the sides of the keyboard. In addition, it is the free place that in other models is occupied by the second fan, made it possible to make SSD replaceable, although it is still not clear why Apple took this opportunity, while for more expensive laptops, the drive was recognized as an acceptable decision on the motherboard.
